Common Fault Signatures:

• UNITROL HMI shows “COMM FAULT” or “BUS TIMEOUT” — The YXU170E has lost its fieldbus heartbeat. First rule out cable damage and connector oxidation at X1/X2 terminals before condemning the board.
• Excitation controller trips on “FIELD CURRENT FEEDBACK LOSS” — The regulation board (YXR101A) is not receiving encoder/feedback data routed through the YXU170E. Swap the communication board first; it is the cheaper and faster fix.
• Intermittent SCADA dropouts with no clear pattern — Classic symptom of a failing onboard oscillator or degraded EEPROM on the YXU170E. Heat cycling accelerates this failure mode in high-ambient-temperature switchrooms.
• Board LED status: PWR solid green, COM LED off or blinking red — Communication layer is down. The board is powered but not communicating. Replace YXU170E.

Replacement Procedure (Field-Verified Steps):

1. De-energize and lock out the excitation cabinet. Confirm field breaker is open and capacitor banks are discharged. Do not work live on UNITROL boards.
2. Record DIP switch positions on the existing YXU170E before removal. Photograph both sides of the board. The address switches configure the board’s node ID on the internal ABB bus — mismatching this on the replacement will cause immediate COMM FAULT on restart.
3. Set DIP switches on the new YXU170E to match the photographed configuration exactly. Node address must match the UNITROL controller’s configured slot assignment.
