1. Fault Code 0x0004 — Major Recoverable Fault (I/O Module Mismatch)
This is the most common post-replacement fault. The new processor comes up and immediately throws a major fault because the I/O configuration stored in the program doesn’t match what’s physically in the chassis. Before you swap the processor, export the RSLogix 500 project file from the failed unit if it’s still partially responsive. If the processor is completely dead, you’ll need to rebuild the I/O tree from the chassis layout. Clear the fault via the keyswitch: RUN → PROG → RUN, or use the fault reset bit (S:1/8) in your ladder logic.

2. Serial Channel Configuration — Don’t Assume It Carries Over
The 1769-L31’s Channel 0 and Channel 1 configurations are stored in the processor’s user program, not in hardware DIP switches. When you load your backed-up program onto the replacement unit, the channel settings (baud rate, parity, stop bits, protocol mode) restore automatically. However, if you’re loading a program from a different revision of RSLogix 500, verify the Channel Configuration dialog manually — mismatched parity is the number-one cause of silent serial communication failures after a processor swap.

3. Firmware Revision Matching
The 1769-L31 has gone through multiple firmware revisions. If your plant runs a validated process (pharmaceutical, food, nuclear), your site qualification may specify an exact firmware revision. 5. Battery Backup — Check It Immediately
The 1769-L31 uses a lithium battery (catalog 1769-BA) to retain the user program during power loss. Replacement units from surplus stock may have depleted batteries. The processor will display a battery fault (S:5/11 bit set) on first power-up if the battery is low. 6. DF1 Half-Duplex Radio Modem Applications
If your 1769-L31 is the master in a DF1 Half-Duplex radio SCADA network, verify the Node Address setting in the Channel Configuration after the swap. The node address is stored in the program, but confirm it matches your network map. A duplicate node address will cause intermittent communication failures that are extremely difficult to diagnose in the field.
