Troubleshooting & Replacement Tips

After ten years of field calls, here are the failure modes we see most often with the 58631 — and what to check before you even open the box on the replacement unit.

Fault 1 — No Ethernet Link (LED off or amber): Before condemning the 58631, verify the switch port. A dead PoE port or a misconfigured VLAN has burned more than one engineer. Swap the patch cable and test on a known-good port. If the 58631’s link LED still won’t come up after power cycle, the internal Ethernet PHY is likely gone — common after a nearby lightning strike or surge event on the LAN side.

Fault 2 — Serial RX/TX LED not blinking: Check your RS-485 termination resistor (120 Ω at each end of the bus). A missing or double-terminated bus will cause the 58631 to receive garbage or nothing at all. Also verify the A/B polarity — W&T labels them correctly but field wiring reversals are extremely common. Use a multimeter: A should be positive relative to B during idle state on RS-485.

Fault 3 — TCP connection established but no data passing: This is almost always a baud rate or framing mismatch. The 58631 stores its serial parameters in non-volatile memory. When you swap in a replacement unit, do not assume factory defaults match your application. Open the embedded web server (default IP: DHCP-assigned, or use W&T’s WuTility tool to discover it) and manually re-enter: baud rate, data bits, parity, stop bits, and TCP mode (Raw TCP vs. Telnet). Fault 4 — IP address conflict after replacement: The 58631 ships with DHCP enabled by default.
