Troubleshooting & Replacement Tips

After ten years of field work on turbine and compressor trains, here are the failure modes I see most often with 3300 Series extension cables — and what to check before you condemn the cable versus the probe or Proximitor®.

Symptom: Gap voltage out of range (not –10 VDC ±0.5 V at nominal gap)
First, disconnect the extension cable at both ends and measure DC resistance end-to-end on the center conductor and shield separately. A good cable reads <1 Ω on center conductor and <0.5 Ω on shield. Any open circuit or resistance >5 Ω points to a broken conductor — usually at the connector crimp or at a tight-radius bend near the machine casing. Symptom: High noise floor / erratic vibration reading at 1× or 2× running speed
Check the shield termination at the Proximitor® end. A floating shield on the extension cable acts as an antenna in high-EMI environments (VFD cabinets, bus ducts). Grounding both ends creates a ground loop that injects 50/60 Hz noise directly into the measurement.

Symptom: Monitor shows OK but DCS receives intermittent trip signal
