Troubleshooting & Replacement Tips

Field experience with DFI21B failures points to three primary failure modes. Knowing which one you are dealing with cuts replacement time significantly.

Fault Code F-43 / Bus Timeout (P831 response triggered): The drive has lost cyclic communication with the Interbus master. Before condemning the DFI21B, verify the ring is intact — Interbus is a serial ring; a broken cable or failed connector anywhere upstream will produce the same symptom. Isolate by disconnecting the OUT port of the suspect node and checking whether the master re-establishes communication with the remaining ring segment. If the ring recovers, the DFI21B or its connectors are the fault source.

LED Diagnostic Interpretation:

• RD (Remote Disable) LED solid red: The module is present but the Interbus master has disabled this node — check master configuration, not the card itself.
• BA (Bus Active) LED off with power present: The DFI21B is not receiving valid Interbus frames. Check upstream node and cable continuity first.
• No LEDs illuminated with drive powered: Option slot power rail failure or card seating issue — reseat the card; if LEDs remain dark, the card is likely failed internally.

Replacement Procedure — Step by Step:

1. De-energise the MOVIDRIVE B fully — wait for DC bus discharge (indicator LED off, minimum 5 minutes).
2. Photograph the existing D-Sub wiring and note cable labelling before disconnecting.
3. Release the option card retaining screw (M3, Torx T10) and slide the DFI21B straight out of the slot.
4. Insert the replacement DFI21B — confirm the card seats fully against the backplane connector; partial seating causes intermittent faults.
5. Reconnect D-Sub cables IN/OUT in the correct ring direction — reversing IN and OUT is the most common commissioning error.
6. Power up the drive. The DFI21B requires no parameter upload — it reads its configuration from the drive’s parameter set (P876, P831, P832). Verify BA LED illuminates within 3 seconds of bus master scan.
7. In MOVITOOLS® MotionStudio, confirm the node appears in the Interbus topology scan and process data exchange is active.

Firmware Note: The DFI21B does not carry user-flashable firmware. Hardware revision is printed on the card label (e.g. Rev. A, Rev. B). Reliability in Harsh Conditions

The card draws power from the drive’s internal regulated supply, isolating it from mains voltage transients that cause premature component aging in externally powered modules.

Humidity and Contamination: The conformal coating applied to the PCB provides protection against condensation and airborne particulates — a common issue in food processing and paper mill environments where humidity can exceed 85% RH non-condensing. The card does not have exposed electrolytic capacitors on the signal side, eliminating the primary humidity-related failure mechanism seen in older fieldbus interface designs.
