Troubleshooting & Replacement Tips
Fault Scenario 1 — CPU powers on but all I/O modules show “Module Error” or go offline simultaneously. This is the classic EH-BS8 backplane failure signature. The CPU communicates via the backplane bus; when the bus degrades (usually from connector oxidation, a cracked PCB trace, or a failed bus driver IC), every slot loses handshake. Don’t waste time swapping I/O modules one by one — replace the base unit first.
Fault Scenario 2 — Intermittent I/O faults that clear on power cycle but return within hours. Thermal cycling causes micro-fractures in the backplane solder joints. If your plant runs high ambient temperatures and you’re seeing this pattern, the base unit is failing progressively. Schedule a replacement during the next planned shutdown before it becomes an emergency.
Replacement Procedure — Field Notes:
- Step 1 — Document before you touch anything. Photograph the slot layout. Note which module occupies which slot number. The EH Series CPU uses slot addressing; if modules are reinstalled in wrong positions, the program will throw I/O mapping errors on restart.
- Step 2 — Power down the entire rack. Isolate the 24VDC supply to the base unit. Do not hot-swap the base unit — the EH-BS8 is not designed for live replacement.
- Step 3 — Remove modules in reverse order. Start from slot 8 back to slot 1, then the CPU last. Label each module with its slot number using tape. The EH Series does not use auto-addressing for I/O modules — physical slot position is fixed in the CPU program configuration.
- Step 4 — Check DIP switch settings on the new base unit. The EH-BS8 has a rack address DIP switch (SW1) on the rear panel. For a single-rack system, all switches should be OFF (address 0). For multi-rack expansion configurations, set the rack number (1–7) to match the original unit exactly. Mismatch here will cause the CPU to fail to recognize the expansion rack entirely.
- Step 5 — Reinstall modules in original slot positions. Seat each module firmly until the locking tab clicks. Loose seating is a common cause of post-replacement faults.
- Step 6 — Power on and verify. The CPU should perform its self-diagnostic scan. Check the RUN/ERR LED status. If ERR flashes, connect your programming tool (HITACHI Ladder Editor or compatible) and read the error code from the CPU diagnostic buffer. Common post-replacement codes: E101 (I/O module count mismatch — check slot positions), E203 (rack address conflict — recheck DIP switches).
- Step 7 — Firmware note. The EH-BS8 itself carries no firmware — it is a passive backplane. However, if you are also replacing the CPU simultaneously, ensure the CPU firmware version matches the program file version stored in your backup. Firmware downgrade is not supported on EH Series CPUs.
