The T9801 fails in predictable ways. Here’s what 10 years of field calls have taught us about this module — and what to check before you even pull the card.

Fault Code 0x4A / Input Channel Mismatch: The most common call-out. One or more channels report a stuck-at-zero or stuck-at-one condition while field wiring checks out clean. Root cause is almost always internal ASIC degradation on the input conditioning circuit, accelerated by sustained over-voltage on the common rail. Before condemning the module, verify your field common voltage is within spec — a shorted field device can take out the common bus and make a healthy T9801 look dead.

Replacement Procedure — Step by Step:

  1. Confirm system state. Check the Trusted controller’s diagnostic display. If the system is in TMR mode and the T9801 is a simplex input, the controller may already be in a degraded voting state. Notify the control room before pulling the card — a hot-swap on a live SIS without authorization is a permit violation on most sites.
  2. Obtain a hot-work / maintenance override permit if required by your site’s MOC procedure. Document the bypass in the SIS bypass log.
  3. Verify firmware revision compatibility. The T9801 carries embedded firmware that must match the Trusted controller’s expected I/O module revision table. Pull the existing module’s label and note the firmware rev (printed on the PCB edge label, format: FW x.xx). Your replacement unit must match or be a qualified upgrade. Mismatched firmware causes the controller to reject the module at initialization — it will not self-configure.
  4. Check backplane slot addressing. The T9801 does not use DIP switches for slot addressing — slot identity is determined by physical backplane position.
