Emerson EZ1000 — Stop the Clock on Your Downtime. Ship Today.
Every hour your line sits idle costs real money. When your current measurement loop drops out — whether it’s a failed transducer on a motor feeder, a blown signal conditioner in your MCC, or a clamp-on CT that’s drifted out of calibration — you don’t have time to wait three weeks for a factory order. The Emerson EZ1000 is on the shelf in Xiamen right now. We’ve handled enough emergency callouts to know that the difference between a four-hour fix and a four-day shutdown is having the right part in hand before the maintenance window closes.
The EZ1000 is a non-invasive, clamp-on AC/DC current transducer rated for 0–1000 A with a 4–20 mA analog output. It installs on an energized conductor without breaking the circuit — no panel shutdown, no arc flash exposure from live terminations, no production interruption. That’s not a marketing claim; it’s the core engineering reason this unit gets specified in energy metering panels, motor control centers, and distributed I/O racks where downtime is measured in dollars per minute.

Troubleshooting & Replacement Tips
The EZ1000 fails in predictable ways. Here’s what to check before you pull the unit and what to watch when you drop the replacement in:
Symptom: 4 mA fixed output (no response to load change)
Nine times out of ten this is a broken CT core — the clamp jaw hinge fatigues after repeated open/close cycles on large-diameter conductors. Inspect the jaw seating surface for hairline cracks. If the core is intact, check loop continuity: a broken wire between the EZ1000 terminals and the PLC AI card will also pin the output at 4 mA (loop open = minimum current).
Symptom: Output saturated at 20 mA regardless of actual load
Verify the conductor is centered in the clamp jaw. Off-center positioning introduces a geometric error that can drive the output into saturation at partial load. Also confirm the conductor carries only one phase — threading two conductors through the jaw (common in retrofit wiring) causes the CT cores to partially cancel, producing erratic or saturated readings.
Symptom: Noisy / oscillating 4–20 mA signal on the PLC AI card
Check the shield termination on the signal cable. The EZ1000 output is low-level and susceptible to VFD switching noise. Shield must be grounded at one end only — typically at the PLC cabinet ground bar, not at the transducer. If noise persists, add a 100 Ω series resistor at the AI card input terminal to damp high-frequency interference.
Replacement procedure (live installation):
- Confirm the replacement unit’s jaw opening matches the conductor diameter — do not force the clamp on an oversized conductor.
- Note the polarity arrow on the clamp jaw before removing the old unit. DC applications require correct orientation; AC is less sensitive but consistency matters for phase-referenced metering.
- Loop-power the new unit before clamping onto the conductor to verify the AI card reads 4.0 mA (zero-load baseline). A reading outside 3.8–4.2 mA indicates a wiring fault — resolve before installation.
- After clamping, apply a known load (motor at rated current if possible) and verify the output scales correctly. Scale the PLC AI channel: 4 mA = 0 A, 20 mA = 1000 A.
- No firmware update, DIP switch, or address configuration is required. The EZ1000 is a passive analog device — plug-and-play replacement with zero commissioning overhead.
Reliability in Harsh Conditions
Industrial panels are not clean environments. The EZ1000 is built to operate where temperature swings between cold startup and full-load thermal soak, where VFD cabinets generate broadband EMI, and where humidity from coastal or process-area installations condenses on electronics overnight.
The enclosure achieves IP20 as a panel-mount device, which is appropriate for the controlled interior of a switchgear cabinet. The operating range of -20°C to +70°C covers the full envelope of outdoor MCC installations in temperate climates and the internal temperatures of densely packed control panels running at full load in summer. The clamp jaw mechanism uses a spring-loaded hinge rated for thousands of open/close cycles — relevant in applications where the transducer is repositioned during periodic maintenance.
EMC performance is validated to CE standards, meaning the unit has been tested for both radiated emissions and immunity to conducted interference. In practice, this matters most in installations adjacent to variable frequency drives, soft starters, and high-current bus systems where switching transients are continuous. The 4–20 mA output’s inherent noise immunity — current loop signals reject common-mode voltage interference that would corrupt a 0–10 V output — makes the EZ1000 the correct choice for long cable runs in electrically noisy environments.
Vibration tolerance is consistent with DIN rail-mounted industrial instrumentation standards. In applications with significant mechanical vibration (compressor rooms, pump stations, press lines), secure the signal cable with a strain relief clamp within 150 mm of the transducer terminals to prevent terminal fatigue.
