Ten years of field calls on MELSERVO-JE drives teach you the same lessons repeatedly. Here is what actually matters when you are swapping an MR-JE-70C under pressure.

Step 1 — Confirm the fault is in the drive, not the motor or cable. Disconnect the U/V/W motor power leads and the encoder connector. Apply control power (L11/L21) only. If the drive still throws AL.16 (encoder error) with nothing connected, the encoder receiver circuit inside the drive is gone. If the alarm clears, your problem is the cable or motor encoder head — not the drive itself. Do not order a replacement drive until you have confirmed this.

Step 2 — Record the parameter set before you pull the old drive. Connect MR Configurator2 via USB (MR-J3USBCBL3M). Navigate to Parameter → Batch Read and export the full parameter file (.prm). If the drive is completely dead and you cannot read it, check your SCADA historian or the PLC program comments — experienced integrators store the servo parameter backup there. Without this file, you will spend 2–3 hours re-tuning from scratch.

Step 3 — Check the station address setting. The MR-JE-70C uses CC-Link IE Field Basic. The station number is set in parameter PA01 (or via the front rotary switch on some firmware revisions).
