Troubleshooting & Replacement Tips
After ten years of field calls, the BINT-12C fails in predictable ways. Here is what to check before you order a second board by mistake:
Fault Code 7001 / 7002 — Option Board Communication Loss: This is the most common trigger for a BINT-12C replacement call. The drive loses handshake with the option slot. Before condemning the board, reseat it firmly — the edge connector oxidizes in humid environments. If reseating clears the fault for less than 48 hours, the board is failing and must be replaced. Do not attempt to clean the connector with abrasive materials; use contact cleaner only.
Fault Code 9000 — Option Board Configuration Mismatch: Occurs after a firmware update on the drive without re-initializing the option board parameters. After installing a new BINT-12C, navigate to drive parameter group 98 (Option Modules) and set 98.01 to the correct module type. Failure to do this will result in immediate fault on power-up — the board is not defective, the parameter table is stale.
Self-Addressing on ACS800: The ACS800 assigns node addresses to option boards automatically at first power-up. If you are replacing a board in a multi-drive DDCS ring, power up the replacement drive in isolation first, confirm the node address in parameter 70.01, then reconnect to the ring. Bringing a factory-default board into a live DDCS ring without address verification will cause a ring collision and take down every drive on that segment.
Firmware Matching: BINT-12C is compatible with ACS800 firmware 7.x and above. If your drive is running firmware 5.x or 6.x, you need BINT-11C. Check the drive nameplate or parameter 33.01 before ordering. Mixing firmware generations is the single most common cause of repeat service calls on this platform.
DIP Switch Settings: On ACS550 installations, SW1 on the BINT-12C controls termination resistance for the DDCS fiber loop. If this board is the last node in the chain, SW1 must be set to ON. If it is a mid-chain node, SW1 must be OFF. Incorrect termination causes intermittent communication faults that are extremely difficult to diagnose without an oscilloscope — get the switch right before closing the cabinet.
ESD Protocol: The BINT-12C contains CMOS logic that is destroyed by static discharge below the threshold of human sensation. Ground yourself to the drive chassis before handling. Do not place the board on plastic surfaces. The anti-static bag it ships in is not optional packaging — use it during any intermediate storage.
Reliability in Harsh Conditions
ABB designed the BINT-12C for the environments where drives actually live — not climate-controlled server rooms, but pump stations, steel mill auxiliary panels, offshore platform MCC rooms, and food processing lines where washdown is a daily event.
The board’s conformal coating provides protection against condensation and airborne contaminants including cutting fluid mist and cement dust, which are the two most destructive environments we encounter in the field. The edge connector is gold-plated to resist the fretting corrosion that destroys tin-plated contacts in high-vibration installations such as compressor skids and crusher drives.
Thermal cycling is where many third-party equivalents fail within 18 months. The BINT-12C uses ceramic capacitors in the power supply section rather than electrolytic types, which means it does not degrade on the daily heat-up/cool-down cycle that kills boards in outdoor enclosures in continental climates. We have pulled BINT-12C boards from ACS800 drives that ran continuously for nine years in a Siberian compressor station — the boards tested within original specification.
Vibration resistance meets IEC 60068-2-6 at 1 g, 10–150 Hz, which covers the resonance frequencies of most rotating machinery. If your installation involves severe shock loading — hammer mills, jaw crushers, vibrating screens — ensure the drive cabinet is properly isolated from the machine frame. The board will survive; the drive’s DC bus capacitors will not.
