The DSQC431 MDU sits between the main computer unit (DSQC639 or DSQC1000) and the servo amplifier stage. When it fails, the IRC5 cabinet typically throws one or more of the following fault codes on the FlexPendant:

• 20001 – Motor current error: The MDU has lost closed-loop current regulation on one or more axes. First suspect: DSQC431 internal PWM driver stage failure.
• 20010 – Drive unit fault: Generic drive bus communication loss. Check the internal ribbon cable connector on the MDU before condemning the board — vibration-induced connector fretting is common on high-cycle lines.
• 20050 – Axis computer fault: Can be triggered by a degraded DSQC431 sending corrupted torque feedback upstream. Swap the MDU before replacing the more expensive axis computer.
• 38101 – SMB communication error: Not directly caused by DSQC431, but a failed MDU can corrupt the SMB communication chain. Verify SMB integrity after MDU replacement.

Replacement procedure — field notes:

1. Power down the IRC5 cabinet and lock out / tag out per site LOTO procedure. Wait a minimum of 5 minutes for DC bus capacitors to discharge before opening the drive section.
2. The DSQC431 is located in the drive module bay. Note the exact slot position — on multi-axis cabinets, MDU slot assignment maps directly to axis number. Incorrect slot reinstallation will cause axis mismatch faults on startup.
3. Disconnect the internal drive bus ribbon cable and the motor power connectors. Label each connector before removal if they are not keyed.
4. The DSQC431 does not have user-accessible DIP switches or address jumpers — axis addressing is handled automatically by the IRC5 controller via slot position. No manual address configuration is required.
5. Firmware: The DSQC431 does not carry user-flashable firmware independently. The IRC5 main computer manages drive firmware via the RobotWare installation. After MDU replacement, boot the controller and verify RobotWare version compatibility. If the controller runs RobotWare 5.x, confirm the replacement unit’s hardware revision is compatible — hardware revision is printed on the module label.
6. Motor calibration data is stored on the Serial Measurement Board (SMB), not on the DSQC431. Calibration is preserved across MDU replacement in normal conditions. However, always run a fine calibration check on the affected axes post-replacement and log the results.
