1785-ME16 In Stock Now — Every Hour of Downtime Costs You Money
Your PLC-5 processor just lost its program. The line is dead. Maintenance is on the phone. You have maybe 30 minutes before plant management walks in. This is exactly the scenario the Allen-Bradley 1785-ME16 EEPROM Memory Cartridge was built to resolve — and it is exactly why we keep it on the shelf, packed and ready to leave Xiamen today.
The 1785-ME16 is a 16K-word non-volatile EEPROM memory cartridge for the Allen-Bradley PLC-5 processor family. Unlike battery-backed RAM modules, EEPROM retains your ladder logic and configuration data through complete power loss, indefinitely, with zero maintenance. No battery to replace. No data corruption after a blackout. When you pull the cartridge and plug it into a replacement processor, your program is there — exactly as you left it.
We have seen plants run the same PLC-5 rack for 20 years. When the processor finally fails, the 1785-ME16 is often the only reason the program survives. If yours is missing, corrupted, or physically damaged, you need a replacement now — not in three weeks from a distributor’s backorder queue.

Troubleshooting & Replacement Tips
Symptom: Processor powers up but fails to load program from cartridge.
First check: is the cartridge fully seated? The 1785-ME16 connector is a friction-fit slot — a partial insertion causes intermittent read failures that look like processor faults. Power down, reseat firmly, power back up. If the fault persists, check the processor’s memory mode switch (typically a small DIP or rotary selector on the processor faceplate). It must be set to “Load from EEPROM” or equivalent — not “Run from RAM.”
Symptom: Program loads but I/O configuration is wrong after swap.
This is a chassis addressing issue, not a memory fault. PLC-5 processors use a rack/slot addressing scheme. If you replaced the processor and the I/O chassis configuration in the program does not match the physical rack layout, you will get I/O faults immediately on first scan. Verify that the processor’s I/O configuration table matches your physical 1771 chassis layout before going online.
Symptom: RSLogix 5 shows “Memory Module Write Protected.”
The 1785-ME16 has a write-protect feature. Check the small write-protect tab on the cartridge body — it functions similarly to an old floppy disk tab. Slide it to the unprotected position before attempting a program download from RSLogix 5.
Replacement procedure (field-tested, 5 steps):
- Place the processor in Program mode via the keyswitch. Never hot-swap memory cartridges.
- Power down the entire rack. Ground yourself with an ESD wrist strap — EEPROM cells are sensitive to static discharge.
- Remove the old cartridge by pressing the release tab and pulling straight out. Note the orientation notch.
- Insert the 1785-ME16 replacement, aligning the notch, until you feel a positive click.
- Power up. The processor will auto-load the program from EEPROM on first boot. Verify the program checksum in RSLogix 5 before switching to Run mode.
Firmware note: The 1785-ME16 is compatible across all PLC-5 firmware revisions. No firmware matching is required for the memory cartridge itself — compatibility is determined by the processor model and the program file size relative to the 16K word capacity.
Reliability in Harsh Conditions
Industrial environments do not forgive weak components. The 1785-ME16 was designed for exactly the conditions that destroy lesser hardware. EEPROM cells have no moving parts and no electrochemical reactions — the two primary failure modes of battery-backed RAM. In high-vibration environments such as compressor skids, press lines, and mining conveyors, the solid-state construction of the 1785-ME16 means there is nothing to shake loose.
In high-temperature areas — near furnaces, in non-air-conditioned electrical rooms in tropical climates, or adjacent to motor drives — the cartridge operates reliably up to 60°C ambient. The conformal coating on the PCB provides additional protection against humidity and condensation, which is a common failure trigger in coastal and offshore installations.
Every unit we ship has been inspected for connector pin integrity, label authenticity, and physical housing condition. Units showing any sign of thermal stress, pin corrosion, or housing damage are rejected. What reaches you is a component that will perform on day one and keep performing.
