Troubleshooting & Replacement Tips
Most common failure modes for 330101-00-28-20-12-05 in the field:
1. Gap voltage railed at -2V or -18V
This is the number one 2 AM call. Before condemning the probe, verify the physical gap. Target gap for this 8 mm probe is 1.0 mm (40 mil), which should produce approximately -10 VDC at the proximitor output. If the gap is correct and voltage is still railed, the probe or extension cable has failed. Swap the probe first — but know that extension cables fail more often than people expect due to connector corrosion at the junction box.
2. Noisy or erratic vibration signal
Check the coaxial connector at both ends. The -05 suffix connector is a standard coaxial type and the center pin is vulnerable to fretting in high-vibration environments. Torque to spec: finger-tight plus one-quarter turn. If noise persists, check shield continuity of the extension cable. A broken shield picks up switching noise from nearby VFDs or ignition systems and will look like a real vibration event on the spectrum.
3. Signal drifts under temperature, stable at rest
The armored cable on this part number is rated to 177 deg C, but the extension cable is not. If the extension cable is routed through a hot zone, thermal drift appears as a slow DC shift in gap voltage. Re-route the extension away from heat sources or specify a high-temperature extension cable variant.
4. Monitor shows Not OK after probe swap
Almost always a total cable length mismatch. The 3300 XL proximitor is calibrated for a specific total cable length — probe integral cable plus extension cable. This part number: 28-inch probe + 12-inch extension = 40 inches total. If you are replacing a probe with a different integral cable length, the proximitor calibration will be off. Verify total cable length matches the proximitor calibration label before declaring the probe faulty.
5. Probe passes bench test but trips the machine on startup
Target material matters. Standard calibration is AISI 4140 steel. Stainless, Inconel, or titanium shafts will produce a different sensitivity — sometimes 20 to 30 percent off. Apply the material correction factor from the Bently Nevada calibration manual or request a custom-calibrated probe. A like-for-like swap is not truly like-for-like if the shaft material is non-standard.
Field replacement procedure:
- De-energize the monitor channel and lock out the proximitor supply (-24 VDC).
- Disconnect the extension cable from the junction box. Label the cable before removal.
- Unscrew the probe from the mounting bracket using the correct spanner on the locknut — not pliers. Count and record the number of turns to remove the probe; this gives you the approximate gap setting for reinstallation.
- Install the new 330101-00-28-20-12-05. Thread in the same number of turns as the removed probe to approximate the original gap.
- Reconnect the extension cable. Inspect the connector O-ring and replace if cracked or flattened.
- Re-energize the proximitor. Measure gap voltage at the monitor card input — target -10 VDC plus or minus 1 VDC for a 1.0 mm gap.
- Fine-adjust probe depth until the gap voltage is within the monitor OK window (typically -7 VDC to -13 VDC for 3300 XL).
- Tighten the locknut. Verify gap voltage does not shift more than 0.5 VDC during locknut tightening — if it does, the probe is binding in the bracket.
- Perform a static calibration check using a calibration target to verify the probe tracks linearly across the measurement range.
- Clear the monitor channel, restore to normal operation, and document the as-left gap voltage in the maintenance record.
Reliability in Harsh Conditions
The 3300 XL probe platform was not designed for a clean lab. It was designed for the inside of a gas turbine enclosure. The 330101-00-28-20-12-05 carries an IP67 rating on the probe body — it survives full immersion in water, oil mist, and process fluid splash without signal degradation. The armored integral cable handles continuous vibration at the probe mounting point, a failure mode that destroys standard cables within months in high-cycle fatigue environments like reciprocating compressors.
Operating temperature range of -35 to +177 deg C covers arctic outdoor installations on the cold end and hot-section turbine bearing housings on the high end. The eddy-current sensing element has no moving parts and no wear mechanism. The probe body will outlast the machine it monitors if the cable and connector are maintained. In field experience across hundreds of units, physical cable damage at the probe exit point and connector corrosion at the junction box account for over 80 percent of failures. The sensing element itself rarely fails spontaneously.
EMI immunity is built into the coaxial cable construction. The -05 connector provides a continuous shield from probe tip to proximitor input, rejecting common-mode noise from VFDs, motor starters, and high-voltage bus bars sharing cable trays in typical plant environments. Every unit is inspected for shield continuity and connector integrity before shipment.
