Troubleshooting & Replacement Tips

Ten years of field work tells you the same story every time: most 3300 XL probe failures fall into three categories. Know which one you’re dealing with before you pull the hardware.

Fault Code: OK LED off / Danger LED solid on 3500/42M monitor
This is almost always a gap fault or a dead probe. First, check the gap voltage at the Proximitor® output terminal — it should read between −10 VDC and −12 VDC at the nominal 1.0 mm installation gap. If you’re reading −24 VDC (rail), the probe tip is open-circuit. If you’re reading 0 VDC, the cable is shorted. Either way, the 330101-00-45-20-12-05 is the field-replaceable unit.

Replacement Procedure (field-expedient, no outage extension):

  • De-energize the Proximitor® driver at the junction box — do NOT disconnect at the 3500 rack under power if you can avoid it.
  • Record the existing gap voltage before removal. Target: −10.0 VDC ±0.5 VDC at 1.0 mm gap.
  • Remove the lock nut and back the probe out. Inspect the probe holder bore for debris or shaft contact scoring.
  • Thread the new 330101-00-45-20-12-05 in by hand until tip contact, then back out 1.0 mm (40 mil). Use a feeler gauge — do not rely on thread count alone.
  • Re-energize and verify gap voltage returns to −10.0 VDC ±0.5 VDC. If it reads outside this band, re-gap in 0.1 mm increments.
  • Confirm the 3500 monitor clears the OK relay and the vibration channel reads baseline noise floor (<1 µm pk-pk at rest).
  • Torque the lock nut to 20 N·m. Do not over-torque — the probe body is 316 SS and the threads will gall.

Reliability in Harsh Conditions

The 3300 XL series was not designed for a lab. It was designed for the bearing housing of a 150 MW steam turbine running at 3,000 RPM in a coastal petrochemical plant where ambient humidity hits 95% RH and the bearing housing temperature never drops below 80 °C.
