Troubleshooting & Replacement Tips

Field experience with the 3300 XL system surfaces the same failure patterns repeatedly. Before you condemn the probe, work through this sequence — it saves unnecessary parts spend.

Step 1 — Verify the Proximitor output rail first. A dead or drifting −24 VDC supply to the 330180 Proximitor will produce a flat or erratic gap voltage that looks exactly like a failed probe. Measure the supply at the Proximitor terminal block. Nominal is −24 VDC ± 1 V. Anything outside −22 to −26 VDC: fix the power supply before touching the probe.

Step 2 — Check gap voltage at the Proximitor output. With the probe installed at the correct gap (typically 1.0 mm for mid-range), the DC output should read approximately −10.5 VDC (±0.5 V). A reading of −1 VDC or less indicates the probe tip is too close or shorted. A reading of −21 VDC or more means the probe is too far or open-circuit. Neither of these is automatically a failed probe — check the physical gap with a feeler gauge before swapping.

Step 3 — Inspect the cable and connector. The MIL-C-17 coaxial connector at the Proximitor input is the most common mechanical failure point. Corrosion, bent center pin, or a cracked connector body will cause intermittent or total signal loss. Clean with contact cleaner, inspect under magnification, and reseat firmly. A damaged connector on an otherwise good probe is a $15 fix, not a $400 probe replacement.

Step 4 — Confirm probe-to-target material compatibility. The 3300 XL 8mm probe is calibrated for AISI 4140 steel targets. Non-magnetic materials (stainless 316, titanium, Inconel) shift the scale factor significantly. If your shaft material is non-standard, the system requires field recalibration with the actual target material — a new probe will not fix a calibration mismatch.

Step 5 — Replacement gap setting. When installing the 330101-00-50-10-02-05, set the initial gap to 1.0 mm (approximately −10.5 VDC output). Use a non-metallic feeler gauge or a calibrated gap-setting tool. Lock the probe locknut to the torque specified in the Bently Nevada installation drawing — typically 20–25 N·m for M10 thread.   • Danger alarm with no process change: Electrical noise on the coaxial cable. Verify cable shield grounding — shield must be grounded at one end only (Proximitor end). Double-grounding creates a ground loop that injects 50/60 Hz noise into the vibration signal.
  • Intermittent channel trips: Thermal cycling of the connector. Most common in outdoor installations with large day/night temperature swings. Replace the connector boot and apply dielectric grease.
  • Slow drift in gap reading over weeks: Probe tip contamination (oil varnish, carbon deposits) or shaft surface oxidation. Clean the target area and re-zero the gap. If drift continues after cleaning, the probe tip coating may be worn — replace the probe.

Chemical resistance: The probe tip and cable jacket resist exposure to lubricating oils, hydraulic fluids, and common industrial solvents. Avoid prolonged contact with strong acids or chlorinated solvents, which can attack the cable jacket material over time.
