Troubleshooting & Replacement Tips
After ten years of field work on rotating machinery, here is what actually goes wrong with 3300 XL proximity probe systems — and what to check before you assume the probe itself is dead.
Fault Code: –24 VDC rail at Proximitor output (no signal swing)
The probe tip is likely making contact with the shaft or the gap is below 0.25 mm. Before condemning the probe, verify the physical gap with a feeler gauge. A shorted probe will pull the Proximitor output to the negative rail. If the gap is correct and the output is still railed, the probe coil is open — replace the 330103-00-02-05-02-00.
Fault Code: 0 VDC output (positive rail)
This indicates an open circuit — broken cable, failed connector, or probe coil failure. Check the integral cable for kinks, crush damage near the bearing housing entry, or corrosion at the Proximitor input connector. If cable continuity is confirmed and the Proximitor is healthy, the probe is the fault.
Noisy or erratic vibration signal (high-frequency hash on trend)
Nine times out of ten this is an extension cable issue, not the probe. Inspect the coaxial connector at the Proximitor input for moisture ingress. Dry and re-torque. If the noise persists, swap the probe — eddy current coils can develop intermittent shorts under thermal cycling.
Replacement procedure — key steps field engineers skip:
- De-energize the Proximitor before disconnecting the probe. Hot-swapping can spike the output and trigger false trips on the 3500 rack.
- Verify the replacement probe system code matches your installed Proximitor. The 330103-00-02-05-02-00 is calibrated for the standard 3300 XL Proximitor. Mixing system codes invalidates the calibration.
- Set the probe gap to 1.0 mm (nominal) using a non-ferrous feeler gauge. Confirm Proximitor output reads approximately –10.2 VDC at this gap. If it reads outside –9.5 to –10.9 VDC, recheck the gap or inspect the target surface for runout.
- Target material matters. The probe is factory-calibrated for AISI 4140 steel. Stainless, Inconel, or titanium shafts require a material correction factor — do not assume the sensitivity constant is the same.
- After installation, perform a static gap check and a slow-roll vibration check before returning the machine to service. Log the DC gap voltage as a baseline for future diagnostics.
- Torque the probe locknut to the manufacturer specification. Over-torquing cracks the PEEK body; under-torquing allows the probe to back out under vibration.
Extension cable compatibility: The 330103-00-02-05-02-00 uses the standard 3300 XL coaxial system. Confirm your extension cable system code (e.g., 330130 series) matches. Mismatched cables alter the total system capacitance and shift the calibration curve.
Reliability in Harsh Conditions
The 3300 XL 8mm probe is not a lab instrument. It is designed to survive the environments that destroy ordinary sensors. The stainless steel tip withstands continuous immersion in bearing oil, steam condensate, and process gas atmospheres without corrosion or dimensional drift. The PEEK polymer body maintains its dielectric properties from cryogenic temperatures up to 177°C — covering everything from LNG compressors to high-pressure steam turbine bearing housings.
Vibration immunity is built into the integral cable design. By eliminating the field-side connector joint between probe and extension cable, Bently Nevada removed the single most common failure point in eddy current systems operating on high-vibration machinery. The coaxial cable is routed and clamped to prevent resonance at running speed harmonics.
In high-humidity environments — offshore platforms, coastal power stations, tropical process plants — the sealed coaxial connector at the Proximitor input is the weak point, not the probe body. Units supplied from our Xiamen warehouse are inspected for connector integrity and stored in controlled humidity conditions. We do not ship probes that have been exposed to uncontrolled storage.
For applications in classified hazardous areas, verify the area classification against the probe’s certification documentation. The 330103-00-02-05-02-00 is not intrinsically safe as supplied — barrier or Zener diode isolation is required for Zone 1 / Division 1 installations.
