Troubleshooting & Replacement Tips

Ten years of field calls teach you that 80% of 3300 XL probe failures fall into four categories. Here is how to diagnose fast and replace right the first time.

Fault 1 — Driver output stuck at –24 V (no gap voltage)
The probe tip is open-circuit. Pull the probe from the bearing housing and inspect the tip under a loupe. Hairline cracks from a rub event are common on steam turbines running above 3,000 RPM. If the tip is intact, check the integral cable for a pinch point at the conduit entry gland — this is the second most common failure site. Replace the probe; do not attempt to repair the cable jacket in the field.

Fault 2 — Scale factor drift, vibration readings 15–30% high
The probe body has thermally cycled beyond its calibration baseline, or the extension cable has been substituted with a non-matched cable. The 330103 series is a matched system: probe + extension cable + driver must all be from the same calibrated set. Swapping only the probe without replacing the extension cable (330130-080-00-00 or -100-00-00) will leave you with a residual scale factor error. Replace the full loop.

Fault 3 — Intermittent OK/NOT OK relay chatter at the 3500 monitor
Ninety percent of the time this is a loose CN connector at the junction box, not a failed probe. Torque the connector to 1.1 N·m and re-check. If the chatter persists, perform a static gap check: with the shaft stationary, the driver output should read between –10.0 V and –11.0 V for a nominal 1.0 mm gap on 4140 steel. Anything outside ±0.5 V of that window indicates a probe or driver fault — swap the probe first, as it is the lower-cost component.

Fault 4 — New probe installed, monitor shows BYPASS or CONFIG fault
This is a configuration mismatch, not a hardware failure. The 3500/42M and 3500/45 monitor cards store probe type and scale factor in non-volatile memory. After installing a replacement probe, you must re-enter the transducer configuration via the 3500 Rack Configuration Software (RCS): navigate to the channel configuration, select Transducer Type = 3300 XL 8 mm, confirm scale factor = 7.87 V/mm, and download the configuration. The monitor will self-clear the CONFIG fault within one scan cycle.

Replacement Checklist (field-ready):

  • ☐ De-energize the 3500 rack channel — do NOT hot-swap under live machinery
  • ☐ Record the existing gap voltage before removal (baseline for new probe setup)
  • ☐ Inspect the probe holder bore for debris or scoring from the failed probe tip
  • ☐ Install new 330103-00-03-10-02-CN; torque probe body to OEM spec (do not over-torque — 316 SS threads are soft)
  • ☐ Reconnect CN connector; verify seating click and apply thread-lock if vibration environment exceeds 2g
  • ☐ Re-enter transducer config in 3500 RCS; download to rack
  • ☐ Verify static gap voltage: –10.0 V ± 0.5 V at 1.0 mm nominal gap
  • ☐ Confirm OK relay energizes and vibration channel reads <5 µm pk-pk at rest
  • ☐ Log replacement in CMMS with new probe serial number and calibration date

Reliability in Harsh Conditions

The 330103-00-03-10-02-CN is not a lab instrument. It is built to survive the environments that destroy lesser sensors.

The 316 stainless steel housing resists the sulfurous condensate found in geothermal turbine bearing housings and the chloride-laden atmosphere of coastal LNG terminals. The IP67 rating means the probe survives full immersion during bearing housing wash-down — a scenario that kills standard IP54 sensors within weeks. The integral cable jacket is rated for continuous flexing at temperatures down to –35 °C, which matters on outdoor compressor trains in northern China winters where cable jackets made from standard PVC become brittle and crack at the conduit entry point.

Vibration endurance is validated to 20g peak sinusoidal per IEC 60068-2-6, covering the resonance frequencies of most turbine bearing pedestals. Shock resistance is rated at 50g per IEC 60068-2-27 — enough to survive the mechanical transient of a turbine trip and coast-down without probe body loosening or connector separation. The eddy-current sensing element itself has no moving parts and no wear mechanism; the only failure modes are mechanical damage (rubs, over-torque) and thermal overstress beyond 177 °C, both of which are detectable during routine inspection.

MTBF in clean industrial service exceeds 200,000 hours. In practice, most 330103 probes outlast the machinery they monitor — the replacement you are ordering today is almost certainly a consequence of a rub event or a maintenance error, not probe wear-out.
