Product Overview

GE UR6NH Digital Inputs Module — Stop the Clock on Your Substation Downtime

Every minute a protection relay is offline in a live substation or industrial power distribution panel is a minute of exposure — to unprotected feeders, regulatory non-compliance, and production loss that compounds fast. The GE UR6NH is the exact digital inputs module your UR Series chassis needs to restore full protection coverage. We stock it in Xiamen. We ship it today.

Whether you’re dealing with a failed module after a lightning strike, a corrupted firmware event that bricked the card, or a routine lifecycle replacement on aging UR Series hardware, the UR6NH is a direct plug-in replacement. No chassis modification. No relay de-energization required if your site procedures permit hot-swap. You pull the failed card, seat the UR6NH, and the relay re-learns the slot configuration automatically on power cycle.

Troubleshooting & Replacement Tips

Most common failure modes on the UR6NH in the field:

1. Relay reports “Module Mismatch” after card swap. This happens when the replacement UR6NH has a different hardware revision than the original. The UR chassis stores the expected module type in non-volatile memory. Fix: open EnerVista UR Setup, navigate to Settings → Product Setup → Module Configuration, delete the old slot assignment for Slot N, save, and power-cycle the relay. The chassis will re-detect the new card and auto-populate the slot.

2. Digital inputs reading “Logic 0” on all channels despite live field wiring. First suspect: the input voltage threshold is not met. The UR6NH has a programmable input threshold — check the relay settings file for the “DI Threshold” parameter under the Digital Inputs element. If the field circuit is 48 V DC and the threshold is set to 125 V DC, every input will read de-asserted. Correct the threshold in EnerVista and download the settings file to the relay.

3. Intermittent input chatter causing spurious protection operations. The UR6NH has a configurable debounce filter (“DI Debounce Time”) per input group. In high-vibration environments — compressor rooms, near large motors — set debounce to 8–16 ms to filter mechanical contact bounce. Default is 4 ms, which is too aggressive for noisy field circuits.

4. Module LED shows solid amber after insertion. Amber = module is recognized but not yet configured in the relay settings file. This is normal on a fresh replacement. Download the existing settings file from your backup (always keep a settings backup before any maintenance) or reconfigure the module in EnerVista. Do not mistake amber for a hardware fault.

Replacement procedure checklist:

  • Back up the relay settings file via EnerVista before touching hardware.
  • Confirm site safety rules — hot-swap is technically supported but requires written authorization at most utilities.
  • Ground yourself with an ESD wrist strap. UR modules are sensitive to electrostatic discharge.
  • Seat the UR6NH firmly until the card locks — a partially seated card will cause intermittent communication errors on the backplane.
  • After power-up, verify all 24 DI channels in the relay’s I/O status screen before returning the relay to service.
  • Document the replacement in the relay’s maintenance log with the new module serial number.

Reliability in Harsh Conditions

The UR Series platform was designed from the ground up for the worst environments electrical protection hardware encounters. The UR6NH carries the same industrial hardening as the rest of the UR family.

Temperature: Rated for continuous operation from -40°C to +60°C. In practice, this covers everything from outdoor switchgear kiosks in northern Canada winters to un-air-conditioned relay rooms in Southeast Asian industrial plants running at 50°C ambient. The onboard components are selected for extended temperature range — no consumer-grade parts on this board.

Vibration and shock: Qualified to IEC 60255-21 Class 2 vibration and shock requirements. This matters in substations adjacent to large rotating machinery, in railway traction power applications where track vibration is constant, and in offshore platform electrical rooms where the entire structure moves. The UR6NH’s card-edge connector and chassis locking mechanism are designed to maintain contact integrity under sustained vibration.

Humidity and condensation: Conformal coating on the PCB provides protection against moisture ingress, condensation cycles, and airborne contaminants including sulfur compounds common in industrial atmospheres. The module has been tested to IEC 60068-2-30 damp heat cycling — 25°C to 55°C at 95% RH, repeated cycles, no functional degradation.

EMC immunity: Meets IEC 61000-4 series immunity requirements including EFT/burst (4 kV), surge (2 kV), conducted RF, and radiated RF. In a substation environment where high-voltage switching generates intense electromagnetic transients, this immunity level is not optional — it is the baseline for reliable operation.
