Common Failure Indicators

• SELF-TEST FAIL alarm on HMI: Usually points to internal watchdog timeout or corrupted firmware. Before condemning the module, attempt a cold reboot via the front panel reset. If the alarm persists across two power cycles, the module is suspect.
• Loss of GOOSE messaging / IEC 61850 link drop: Check Ethernet port LEDs first. If the link is physically up but GOOSE is silent, the issue is often a firmware mismatch after a substation-wide upgrade. Confirm the UR73FH firmware version matches the IED configuration tool (EnerVista UR Setup) project file.
• Relay output chatter or spurious trip: Inspect the binary output module contacts for carbon tracking. On older units, the BO module degrades before the main CPU card. Isolate the BO module first before pulling the entire chassis.
• No communication on RS-485 Modbus port: Verify termination resistor jumper setting on the rear communication card. The UR platform requires the last device on the RS-485 bus to have the 120Ω terminator enabled — a frequently missed step during replacement.

Replacement Checklist — Do This Before You Power Up the New Unit

• Export the full settings file from EnerVista UR Setup before removing the old module. Even a failed unit can often be read via USB if the CPU is partially functional.
• Note the firmware version on the label of the outgoing unit. The replacement must run the same major firmware revision or be upgraded before commissioning. Mismatched firmware between UR modules in a multi-relay scheme causes protection coordination errors.
