Product Overview

6ES7321-1BH02-0AA0 SM321 — Every Hour of Downtime Costs You. We Ship Today.

Your S7-300 rack is dead. The line is stopped. Maintenance is standing by. You already know the module — 6ES7321-1BH02-0AA0, the 16-channel 24VDC digital input card that’s been reading your proximity switches, limit switches, and pushbuttons for years without complaint. Now it’s gone, and every minute it stays gone is money walking out the door.

We stock this module in Xiamen. Not “available to order” — physically on the shelf, tested, and ready to pack. DHL Express to most destinations in 2–4 business days. That’s the difference between a half-day outage and a week-long production crisis.

Troubleshooting & Replacement Tips

Ten years in the field, and the failure modes on this card are predictable. Here’s what you need to know before you pull the old one and slot in the new one.

Common Failure Symptoms:

  • SF LED solid red, no channel LEDs lit: Internal bus communication fault. The CPU has lost the module from its hardware config. Check backplane bus connector pins for corrosion or mechanical damage before condemning the module itself.
  • One 8-channel group dead, other group fine: Classic optocoupler group failure, often caused by a sustained overvoltage event on the field side (inductive kick from an unprotected solenoid). Replace the module. Also add suppression diodes to the offending field devices.
  • Intermittent inputs on channels 8–15: Check the 2L+ supply to the second group. This group has its own 24VDC supply terminal — a loose wire here kills half the card and looks like a module fault.
  • All inputs read 0 in the CPU, SF LED off: Module is communicating but field power is missing. Verify 24VDC at terminal 1L+ and 2L+. Don’t swap the module until you’ve confirmed field supply voltage.

Replacement Procedure — Field Checklist:

  1. Note the slot number before removal. Slot position determines the byte address in the process image (Slot 4 = IB0/IB1, Slot 5 = IB2/IB3, etc.).
  2. Remove the 40-pin front connector — it retains wiring, so you don’t need to rewire. Swing it out and hang it clear.
  3. Release the module locking screw (top and bottom), slide the module forward off the backplane bus connector.
  4. Seat the new 6ES7321-1BH02-0AA0 in the same slot. Firm pressure until the bus connector clicks. Tighten locking screws.
  5. Reattach the front connector. Power up.
  6. No HW Config download required — the -1BH02 is slot-addressed automatically. The CPU will recognize it on the next power cycle or OB82 restart without a new configuration download, provided the slot assignment in your existing HW Config already has this module type defined.
  7. If you’re replacing a -1BH01 with a -1BH02: direct drop-in, identical electrical spec, no config change needed.
  8. Verify all 16 channel LEDs respond correctly to field signals before releasing the line.

Input Filter Setting — Don’t Overlook This: The default filter delay is 6.4 ms. If your application uses high-speed proximity switches or encoder-derived signals, you may need to switch to 1.2 ms in HW Config (Module Properties → Inputs → Input Delay). A new module ships with hardware defaults; the CPU applies the configured filter on the first scan after startup.

ET 200M Deployment Note: If this module is installed in an ET 200M station via IM 153-x, the PROFIBUS address of the IM module and the slot mapping must be verified in your HW Config after replacement. The SM 321 itself has no DIP switches or node addressing — all addressing is positional.

Reliability in Harsh Conditions

The S7-300 platform was engineered for the factory floor, not the server room. The 6ES7321-1BH02-0AA0 reflects that design philosophy at the I/O level.

The two-group galvanic isolation architecture is the first line of defense. Each 8-channel group is optically isolated from the backplane bus, meaning a ground fault or voltage spike on the field side stays on the field side. In environments with heavy inductive loads — motor starters, solenoid valves, pneumatic actuators — this isolation is what keeps your CPU running when a field device fails catastrophically.

The module is rated to 60 °C in horizontal mounting orientation, which covers the majority of non-climate-controlled panel installations in foundries, cement plants, and outdoor enclosures in tropical climates. The 10–95% RH non-condensing humidity rating handles coastal and high-humidity manufacturing environments without derating.

Vibration and shock resistance meets IEC 61131-2 requirements — the same standard that governs the mechanical robustness of industrial control equipment. In practice, this module has proven reliable in applications with continuous vibration from compressors, presses, and heavy machining centers mounted in the same structure as the control panel.

The IP 20 enclosure rating means the module relies on the control cabinet for environmental protection. Ensure your cabinet maintains positive pressure or adequate sealing in dusty environments. The module’s conformal coating (standard on Siemens S7-300 I/O) provides additional protection against condensation and airborne contaminants during brief exposure events.

Input circuitry is IEC 61131-2 Type 1 / Type 3 compliant, which means it tolerates the signal quality you actually get from field devices — not the clean square waves you see in a lab. Slow-switching reed contacts, long cable runs with capacitive loading, and marginal 24VDC supplies all fall within the operating envelope of this input design.
