Troubleshooting & Replacement Tips
Common fault codes that point to a failed SGMAS-01A2A-YR11:
- A.C1 / A.C2 — Encoder communication error. Before condemning the motor, check CN2 cable continuity and shield grounding. If the cable is intact and the fault persists after drive power cycle, the encoder disk or ASIC inside the motor is the culprit.
- A.80 — Absolute encoder error (even on incremental units, this can appear if the encoder supply voltage drops below 4.75 V). Measure pin 1–2 of CN2 under load. Voltage sag = bad encoder or shorted winding.
- A.40 / A.41 — Overload / instantaneous overload. If the mechanical load hasn’t changed, check winding resistance phase-to-phase (should be balanced within 5%). An open or shorted winding will cause asymmetric current draw and thermal trip.
- A.73 — DB resistor overload. Often triggered by repeated emergency stops with a degraded motor that can’t regenerate cleanly. Replace motor first, then verify DB resistor value.
Step-by-step replacement procedure:
- Power down & lockout. Confirm DC bus voltage on the SGDM/SGDH is below 50 V before touching any connector. The bus capacitors hold charge for up to 5 minutes after AC disconnect.
- Label and photograph wiring. CN1 (control) and CN2 (encoder) connectors are keyed but document pin orientation anyway — especially if the harness has been field-modified.
- Disconnect CN2 first. Encoder cable carries 5 V logic signals; pulling it under power won’t damage the drive, but it will trigger an A.C1 alarm and log a fault event.
- Remove motor from machine. Note the shaft coupling alignment marks before extraction. The SGMAS A-frame uses four M4 bolts on a 60 mm bolt circle. Torque spec on reinstall: 1.5 N·m.
- No parameter changes required for a like-for-like SGMAS-01A2A-YR11 swap. The drive retains Pn000–Pn212 in non-volatile memory. Do NOT perform a factory reset (Fn005) unless you have a backup of the parameter file.
- Encoder initialization: This is an incremental encoder — no absolute position initialization needed. After power-up, the drive will request a home cycle if your PLC program requires it. Execute homing before resuming production.
- Verify Pn50A (input signal selection) is set correctly for your machine’s servo-on and alarm-reset logic. A common mistake after motor swap is assuming the drive parameters are untouched — confirm before running at speed.
- Run JOG test at 100 rpm via Fn002 (JOG operation) before reconnecting to the machine. Listen for bearing noise and confirm encoder feedback is clean (no A.C1 recurrence).
Configuration notes specific to SGMAS-01A2A-YR11:
- No DIP switches or address dials on this motor — all configuration lives in the SGDM/SGDH drive parameters.
- Pn001.0 (control mode) must match your host controller output: 0 = speed control, 1 = position control (pulse train). Confirm this hasn’t been altered.
- If replacing a motor that had a brake (SGMAS-01A2A-YR21), you must update Pn001.3 to disable brake interlock output, otherwise the drive will fault on brake signal absence.
- Maximum encoder cable length: 20 m standard, 50 m with line-driver option. Exceeding this causes intermittent A.C1 faults that are notoriously difficult to diagnose.
Reliability in Harsh Conditions
The SGMAS-01A2A-YR11 is built for environments that would kill lesser motors. IP55 sealing blocks coolant mist and fine particulate — the two most common causes of premature motor failure in machine-tool and packaging environments. Class F insulation (155 °C thermal limit) gives you a 25 °C margin over Class B, which translates directly into longer winding life under sustained overload conditions.
Vibration resistance is rated to 49 m/s² (5G) across 10–200 Hz — sufficient for press-room floors and conveyor-mounted axes where resonance is a constant threat. The A-frame housing is cast aluminium with a ribbed profile that dissipates heat passively; there is no cooling fan to fail or clog.
In high-humidity environments (coastal factories, food processing), the IP55 rating combined with the moisture-barrier packaging we use for storage means the motor arrives dry and stays dry through installation. We’ve shipped to facilities in Malaysia, Vietnam, and coastal China where ambient humidity runs above 85% RH year-round — no corrosion complaints.
The 2,500 ppr incremental encoder uses a glass disc and differential line-driver output. It is significantly more noise-immune than single-ended encoder designs, which matters in panel environments with VFDs and welding equipment generating conducted EMI. Proper shielding of the CN2 cable (drain wire to PE at the drive end only) is still required — but the differential signal gives you a fighting chance even in electrically noisy installations.
