Troubleshooting & Replacement Tips

After 10 years of field work on servo systems, here’s what actually matters when you’re swapping an MR-JN-20A under pressure:

Common Fault Codes on the MR-JN-20A:

  • AL.10 (Undervoltage): Check single-phase input voltage at CN1. Confirm it’s within 100–240 V AC range. A sagging supply rail during motor acceleration is the #1 cause of nuisance trips on this unit.
  • AL.16 (Encoder Error): Before condemning the amplifier, swap the encoder cable first. Damaged shielding on the encoder cable causes intermittent AL.16 on MR-JN units far more often than actual encoder failure.
  • AL.32 (Overcurrent): Verify motor wiring phase sequence (U/V/W). A single transposed phase on the motor output connector will trigger AL.32 immediately on power-up. Also check for insulation breakdown between motor phases and ground — use a 500 V megger.
  • AL.50 (Overload): The MR-JN-20A is rated for 200 W continuous. If the load inertia ratio exceeds the amplifier’s tuning range, you’ll see AL.50 during acceleration. Check parameter PA08 (auto-tuning response) and reduce if necessary.

Replacement Checklist — Do This Before Powering Up the New Unit:

  1. Parameter backup first. If the old unit still powers on (even with a fault), connect MR Configurator2 via USB (cable: MR-J3USBCBL3M) and export the parameter file. The MR-JN-20A has no built-in parameter copy function between units — you must do this manually.
  2. Check PA01 (Control Mode). Factory default is position control (pulse train). If your application uses analog speed or torque command, PA01 must be set to 1 or 2 respectively before enabling the drive. Running in the wrong control mode with a live command signal will cause immediate runaway.
  3. Verify PA13 (Command Pulse Mode). The MR-JN-20A supports four pulse input formats: sign + pulse, CW/CCW, 2-phase (A/B quadrature), and 2-phase with 4x multiplication. Mismatch between PA13 and the PLC output format is the second most common commissioning error after control mode mismatch.
  4. Check the regenerative resistor wiring. If the original installation used an external MR-RB032 regenerative resistor, confirm the P/C terminal jumper is removed and the external resistor is reconnected. Leaving the internal jumper in place with an external resistor connected will damage the new unit within minutes under load.
  5. Motor-amplifier pairing. The MR-JN-20A is rated for HF-KN series motors up to 200 W (e.g., HF-KN13, HF-KN23). Connecting a higher-rated motor will not cause immediate failure but will result in AL.50 under load and degraded torque linearity. Confirm the motor nameplate matches the amplifier capacity.
  6. Ground the shield. The encoder cable shield must be grounded at the amplifier end (CN2 shell) only — not at both ends. Double-grounding the shield introduces ground loop noise that manifests as position drift and intermittent AL.16.

Reliability in Harsh Conditions

The MR-JN-20A was not designed for a climate-controlled server room. It was built for the factory floor — and it shows in the design choices Mitsubishi Electric made throughout the unit.

The power stage uses IGBT modules rated well above the 200 W continuous output, providing thermal headroom during high-cycle duty profiles. The natural convection cooling design eliminates the fan — which means no fan bearing failure, no filter clogging, and no airflow dependency. In foundry environments, press shops, and food processing facilities where ambient temperatures regularly hit 45–50 °C, the absence of a cooling fan is not a compromise; it’s an engineering advantage.

Vibration resistance is addressed through conformal coating on the control PCB and mechanically secured connector housings. Units installed on machine frames subject to 5–50 Hz continuous vibration — common in stamping presses and textile machinery — have demonstrated multi-year service lives without connector fretting or PCB trace cracking.

Humidity tolerance is rated to 90% RH non-condensing. In coastal manufacturing facilities and tropical climates, this matters. The sealed enclosure design prevents moisture ingress during temperature cycling, which is the primary failure mechanism for servo drives in high-humidity environments.

Every unit we ship has been stored in controlled conditions — temperature-regulated, humidity-monitored, anti-static packaging — from the moment it left the factory. We do not sell units that have been sitting in uncontrolled warehouse environments for years. Shelf life matters for electrolytic capacitors, and we take it seriously.
