Product Overview

W&T 58631 Com Server – Stop the Clock on Serial Communication Downtime

When a serial-to-Ethernet link drops in a live production environment, every minute of diagnostic delay compounds into measurable financial loss. The Wiesemann & Theis W&T 58631 Com Server is a field-proven RS-232/RS-485/RS-422 to TCP/IP gateway that sits at the boundary between legacy serial devices and modern Ethernet infrastructure. When this unit fails — or when a plant expansion demands an additional node — waiting weeks for standard distribution channels is not an option. We stock the W&T 58631 in Xiamen, China, and ship globally via DHL and FedEx express, with same-day dispatch available for orders confirmed before 14:00 CST.

This is not a generic device server. The 58631 is a purpose-engineered Com Server from W&T’s established 58xxx series, designed for deterministic serial-to-network bridging in industrial automation, building management, and SCADA environments. Its transparent TCP/IP tunneling architecture means your existing serial application software — Modbus RTU masters, proprietary PLC communication stacks, energy meter polling routines — continues to operate without modification. The network sees a TCP socket; the serial device sees a physical COM port. No middleware, no driver rewrites.

Troubleshooting & Replacement Tips

The W&T 58631 is reliable under normal operating conditions, but field failures do occur — typically after power surge events, network topology changes, or extended operation in high-humidity enclosures. Below are the most common fault scenarios and the configuration checkpoints that determine whether a replacement unit will come online cleanly.

Fault 1 – No Ethernet Link (LED off or amber): Before condemning the unit, verify the RJ-45 cable and switch port. If the link LED remains off with a known-good cable, the internal Ethernet PHY has likely failed — a hardware fault that is not field-repairable. Replace the unit. On the replacement, confirm the IP address assignment method: if the failed unit used a static IP, you must pre-configure the replacement via the web interface (default IP: 172.16.231.1) before installing it in the panel. If DHCP was in use, the new unit will acquire an address automatically, but update your SCADA host file or DNS entry to reflect the new MAC address if IP reservation was not configured on the DHCP server.

Fault 2 – Serial Port Not Responding (TCP connection established, no data): This is the most common field complaint. Root causes in order of frequency: (a) serial interface mode mismatch — verify via the web UI that the port is set to RS-485 2-wire if your field device uses a 2-wire bus; RS-232 and RS-422 4-wire are separate selections. (b) Baud rate or parity mismatch — the 58631 does not auto-detect serial parameters; they must match the connected device exactly. (c) Termination resistor — on RS-485 buses longer than 10 m, enable the internal 120 Ω termination if the 58631 is at the physical end of the bus. This setting is accessible in the web configuration under Serial Port → RS-485 Termination.

Fault 3 – Intermittent TCP Disconnections: Typically caused by keep-alive timeout mismatches between the 58631 and the SCADA client. Navigate to Network → TCP Parameters and set the TCP keep-alive interval to match your SCADA system’s session timeout. For Wonderware and Ignition clients, 30-second keep-alive with 3 retries is a stable baseline. Also verify that no NAT device between the 58631 and the SCADA server is silently dropping idle TCP sessions.

Replacement Configuration Checklist:

  • Record the existing unit’s IP address, subnet mask, gateway, and DNS settings before removal
  • Export the configuration file from the web UI (if the unit is still partially functional) — W&T web interface supports config export/import
  • Note the serial port mode (RS-232 / RS-485 2W / RS-485 4W / RS-422), baud rate, data bits, parity, stop bits, and flow control
  • Note the TCP operating mode: TCP Server, TCP Client, or UDP — and the target IP/port if in Client mode
  • After installing the replacement, import the saved config file or manually re-enter all parameters
  • Verify the virtual COM port mapping on the SCADA host if using W&T WuTility or a third-party COM redirector
  • Perform a loopback test on the serial port before reconnecting the field device

Reliability in Harsh Conditions

The W&T 58631 is designed for continuous unattended operation in industrial panel environments. Its wide DC input range of 10–30 V DC accommodates both 12 V and 24 V DC bus architectures without an intermediate power converter, reducing one potential failure point in the power chain. The internal power supply is reverse-polarity protected, which matters in field installations where wiring errors during maintenance are a real risk.

The operating temperature range of 0 °C to +55 °C covers the majority of indoor industrial enclosure environments, including those without active cooling in moderate climates. The DIN-rail plastic enclosure is rated for the mechanical vibration levels typical of machine-mounted control panels — the unit does not require shock-absorbing mounts in standard applications.

On the EMC side, the 58631 carries CE marking, which includes compliance with EN 61000-4-2 (ESD), EN 61000-4-4 (EFT/burst), and EN 61000-4-5 (surge) immunity tests. In practice, this means the unit can tolerate the conducted interference levels generated by variable-frequency drives, contactors, and solenoid valves sharing the same panel — provided the installation follows standard EMC practice: separate signal and power cable routing, proper PE bonding of the DIN rail, and shielded cable on RS-485 runs exceeding 5 m.

The RoHS-compliant construction ensures the unit meets environmental compliance requirements for EU deployments and for customers with green procurement policies. No lead-based solder, no restricted substances — documentation available on request.
