Troubleshooting & Replacement Tips

After a decade of field work on rotating machinery — refineries, power stations, LNG terminals, paper mills — the failure patterns on 3300-series probe housings are predictable. Here is how to work through them without wasting time.

Fault 1 — Gap Voltage Out of Specification
This is the most common call-out. The 3300 XL proximitor expects a DC gap voltage between −10 V and −18 V at its output. If you are outside that window after fitting the new 31000 SC115582-1 housing, the probe tip-to-target gap is wrong — not the part. Standard gap for an 8 mm probe against a carbon steel target is 1.0 mm ± 0.25 mm. Measure with a non-metallic feeler gauge. Do not carry over the old shim stack without verifying it. Once gap is set, torque the jam nut to 20 N·m and re-check gap voltage before releasing the channel.

Fault 2 — Intermittent Output or Elevated Noise Floor
Before condemning the housing assembly, inspect the TNC connector at the proximitor input. Oxidation on the center pin produces exactly this symptom and is far more common than housing failure. Clean with isopropyl alcohol and a lint-free swab. If the housing cable entry shows cracking or deformation at the strain relief, replace the assembly — field repair of the strain relief is not a viable option and will fail again under vibration.

Fault 3 — Mechanical Damage from Impact or Over-Torque
Galled threads or a cracked housing body have one resolution: replacement. The 31000 SC115582-1 is a direct drop-in. Installation procedure: clean the mounting boss threads with the correct tap size, apply anti-seize compound to the housing threads (never thread-locking compound — thermal cycling will fracture the housing body), install and torque to specification, then set gap and record the new gap voltage in the machinery history file before returning the unit to service.

Fault 4 — Scale Factor Mismatch After Probe-and-Housing Set Replacement
The 31000 housing carries no firmware — it is a passive mechanical assembly. However, if you are replacing the probe and housing together as a matched set, verify the proximitor scale factor against the new probe sensitivity before re-enabling the protection channel. Standard 3300 XL 8 mm probes are calibrated at 7.87 V/mm. A scale factor mismatch will cause the protection system to alarm or trip at incorrect vibration amplitudes. Cross-reference the proximitor label against your system documentation. This step is skipped more often than it should be.

Fault 5 — OK Relay Logic After Proximitor Replacement
Not applicable to the 31000 housing itself, but relevant if you are simultaneously replacing the proximitor: confirm the internal jumper for OK relay logic (normally energized vs. normally de-energized) matches the original configuration before powering up. An incorrect jumper position will generate a spurious machine trip on first startup — a situation that is embarrassing at best and dangerous at worst if the operator interprets it as a real fault.

Reliability in Harsh Conditions

The 31000 SC115582-1 was not designed for a clean instrument room. It was designed for the bearing housing of a high-speed compressor train running in a tropical refinery, or the turbine pedestal of a combined-cycle power block in a desert environment. The 316L stainless steel body resists sulfur compounds, chloride atmospheres, and the caustic wash-down chemicals used in food-grade and pharmaceutical processing facilities.

The IP67 sealed construction keeps condensation, process fluid mist, and high-pressure wash-down water out of the probe cavity. In paper mills and petrochemical plants where daily hose-downs are standard operating procedure, this is not a nice-to-have — it is the difference between a sensor that lasts three years and one that fails in three months.

Vibration endurance is rated at 20 g continuous across 10–2,000 Hz. That spectrum covers the fundamental running frequency and the first several harmonics of virtually every industrial rotating machine from 300 RPM steam turbines to 60,000 RPM turboexpanders. The jam-nut locking design prevents the housing from backing out under sustained vibration — a failure mode that is endemic in cheaper third-party housings and that causes progressive gap drift long before the housing physically loosens.

Thermal performance across the −35 °C to +120 °C operating range ensures dimensional stability through cold-start and full-load thermal cycles. Gap drift caused by thermal expansion of a substandard housing is one of the most insidious failure modes in machinery protection — it produces readings that look plausible but are wrong, leading to either missed faults or nuisance trips. The 31000 SC115582-1 eliminates that variable.

Every unit dispatched from our Xiamen facility is stored in climate-controlled conditions and inspected for housing integrity, thread condition, and connector cleanliness before packaging. Shipments leave in anti-static, moisture-barrier packaging with desiccant inserts.

Global Express Logistics

Our Xiamen warehouse is located 40 minutes from Xiamen Gaoqi International Airport (XMN), a primary cargo hub with direct freighter connections to Frankfurt, Dubai, Los Angeles, Singapore, and Amsterdam. That geography is deliberate — it is what allows us to offer genuine same-day dispatch to virtually any destination worldwide.

Express Carrier Options:

  • DHL Express Worldwide: 2–4 business days door-to-door. Full tracking from pickup to delivery. Preferred routing for Europe, Middle East, and Southeast Asia.
  • FedEx International Priority: 2–3 business days. Preferred for North America and Latin America. Customs clearance documentation support included.
  • SF International Express: 1–2 business days for intra-Asia destinations — Hong Kong, Singapore, South Korea, Japan, Taiwan.

Order-to-Airborne Process:

  • Order confirmed and payment cleared → warehouse pick and pre-shipment inspection (same day for orders before 14:00 CST)
  • Export documentation prepared: commercial invoice, packing list, EAR99 classification confirmation
  • Courier collection from our facility within 2–4 hours of documentation completion
  • Tracking number issued to buyer by email within 1 hour of courier pickup
  • Destination customs clearance: full documentation package provided to minimize broker delays

For shutdown projects requiring multiple line items or consolidated emergency shipments, contact us directly for a dedicated logistics plan. We have coordinated emergency airfreight consolidations for plant shutdowns across the Middle East, West Africa, and Southeast Asia. We understand that in a forced outage, every hour of freight delay carries a measurable production cost.
