Troubleshooting & Replacement Tips

Most common failure modes for this probe in the field:

1. OK LED extinguished on the Proximitor, -24 V supply confirmed good. Nine times out of ten this is a cracked probe tip from a rub event or a shorted integral cable from vibration fatigue at the probe body exit. Measure DC output at the Proximitor COM terminal — if you read less than −2 V or more than −18 V with the probe at mid-gap, the probe coil is open or shorted. Replace the probe; the Proximitor is likely fine.

2. Intermittent high-vibration alarm with no process change. Check the cable routing between probe and extension cable junction. The 330903 series uses a push-on coaxial connector at the junction box. Corrosion or a loose seating at this junction introduces noise that mimics real vibration. Clean with contact cleaner, reseat, and re-torque to 0.9 N·m. If the alarm clears, schedule a cable replacement at next outage.

3. Replacing the probe — step-by-step:

  • De-energize the Proximitor supply rail. Do not hot-swap — the coil inrush can spike the monitor input and trigger a spurious trip.
  • Back the probe out of the holder. Note the gap setting: count turns from flush. Standard gap for 8 mm tip on 4140 steel is 1.0 mm (40 mil), corresponding to −10.0 VDC output.
  • Install the new 330903-00-11-10-02-05/CN. Thread to the same turn count. Reconnect the extension cable — verify the coaxial connector seats fully with an audible click.

The 330903 series was designed for the inside of bearing pedestals — one of the most hostile measurement environments in industrial machinery. The probe tip is encapsulated in a high-temperature epoxy compound rated to 177 °C continuous, with short-term excursions to 200 °C. The stainless-steel body is rated IP67 and resists the oil mist, steam condensate, and process gas leakage common in turbine bearing housings.
