Troubleshooting & Replacement Tips
Before you pull the old module, do these three things:
1. Back up the program and configuration. Connect via PME, go to Target → Upload from Controller, and save the .project file to a USB drive. If the CPU is already dead and won’t communicate, check whether a CompactFlash card is installed — the IC698CRE030 can store a backup image on CF. Pull the card and read it on a PC before discarding the failed unit.
2. Record the IP address and Ethernet settings. The CPU’s IP is stored in non-volatile memory. If you can still ping it, document the address, subnet, gateway, and Station Manager name. If not, check your network documentation or the HMI project — the IP is usually hardcoded in the SCADA driver configuration.
3. Note the firmware revision. In PME, go to Target → Properties → Controller Info. Write down the firmware version. The replacement unit must run the same major firmware revision or higher. Mismatched firmware between a CPU and its I/O modules causes fault codes and failed I/O scans.
Common fault codes on the IC698CRE030 and what they mean:
- 0x0083 — CPU Hardware Fault: Internal processor error. Usually non-recoverable. Replace the CPU. Before condemning it, reseat the module and cycle power once — occasionally a backplane contact issue mimics this fault.
- 0x0010 — Memory Parity Error: RAM corruption. Can be triggered by power surges or capacitor aging on boards over 8 years old. Replace the CPU; do not attempt to clear and continue in a safety-critical application.
- 0x0051 — Ethernet Port Fault: Onboard NIC failure. The CPU may still run the PLC program, but SCADA and remote programming will be lost. Temporary workaround: add an IC698ETM001 Ethernet module to the rack and reroute communications while you wait for the replacement CPU.
- 0x0020 — Battery Low / Fail: The onboard lithium battery backs up the real-time clock and retentive memory. Replace the battery (GE part IC698ACC701) before replacing the CPU if this is the only fault. If the CPU is also faulted, replace both.
- Constant RUN/STOP cycling: Usually a corrupted program or a hardware fault in the power supply, not the CPU. Swap the power supply first — it’s faster and cheaper. If cycling continues with a known-good PSU, the CPU is the culprit.
Swap procedure (field-tested, 15-minute target):
- Place the controller in STOP mode via the keyswitch or PME.
- Power down the chassis. Do not hot-swap the CPU — the RX7i CPU slot is not designed for live insertion.
- Remove the failed IC698CRE030. Note the slot position (always Slot 0 in the RX7i chassis).
- Insert the replacement module. Ensure the module seats fully — you should feel a positive click from the backplane connector.
- Power up the chassis. The CPU will boot and enter STOP/FAULT state if no program is loaded.
- Connect via PME. Download the backed-up program. Set the IP address via the Station Manager or PME’s hardware configuration.
- Perform an I/O force test on critical outputs before returning to RUN mode.
- Switch to RUN. Verify scan time is within expected range (check Target → Diagnostics → Scan Time).
Reliability in Harsh Conditions
The IC698CRE030 was engineered for environments that destroy consumer-grade electronics. The VME-based backplane architecture provides mechanical rigidity that surface-mount PCB designs can’t match — the module can withstand continuous vibration up to 2G across 10–500 Hz, which covers everything from compressor skid resonance to conveyor drive harmonics.
Thermal management is passive and deliberate. The aluminum heatsink on the processor section dissipates heat without fans, eliminating the single most common failure point in industrial electronics. Units operating at the rated 60°C ceiling in steel enclosures with poor airflow have logged 10+ years of continuous service in documented field installations.
The conformal coating on the PCB provides protection against humidity, condensation, and airborne contaminants — relevant in coastal plants, paper mills, and food processing facilities where moisture ingress is a constant threat. The coating meets IPC-CC-830 standards and provides a meaningful barrier against conductive contamination that causes leakage currents and intermittent faults on uncoated boards.
All units we ship are inspected for corrosion on the backplane connector pins — the most common physical failure mode on modules pulled from humid environments. Pins are cleaned and verified for continuity before dispatch. We do not ship modules with bent, corroded, or missing backplane pins.
Global Express Logistics
Our warehouse is located in Xiamen, Fujian Province — one of China’s primary export hubs with direct access to DHL Express, FedEx International Priority, and UPS Worldwide Express gateways. This is not a drop-ship operation. The module is physically in our facility.
Typical transit times from Xiamen:
- Southeast Asia (Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia): 2–3 business days via DHL Express
- Middle East (UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar): 3–4 business days via FedEx International Priority
- Europe (Germany, UK, Netherlands, France): 3–5 business days via DHL Express
- North America (USA, Canada, Mexico): 3–5 business days via FedEx International Priority
- Australia / New Zealand: 3–4 business days via DHL Express
- South America (Brazil, Chile, Colombia): 5–7 business days via DHL Express
Our export process: Orders confirmed before 14:00 CST are packed and handed to the carrier the same day. We generate the AWB and send you the tracking number within 2 hours of pickup. All shipments include commercial invoice, packing list, and a certificate of conformance. For customs-sensitive destinations, we can adjust the declared value description to reduce clearance friction — contact us before we ship if this applies to your import port.
We have shipped IC698CRE030 units to refineries in the Middle East, automotive plants in Eastern Europe, and water treatment facilities in Southeast Asia. Emergency shipments with Saturday pickup are available on request — call or WhatsApp us directly, do not rely on email for same-day requests.
