Troubleshooting & Replacement Tips
After ten years pulling failed probes off turbine pedestals in the field, here is what actually goes wrong with the 330910 and what to check before you condemn the part:
Fault 1 — Proximitor output rail-high (−24 VDC) or rail-low (0 VDC)
Nine times out of ten this is a gap problem, not a dead probe. Before you pull the probe, check the physical gap with a feeler gauge. Nominal is 1.0 mm (40 mil). If the shaft has shifted axially due to a thrust bearing failure, the probe tip may be outside its linear range. Re-gap first. If output still rails after re-gapping, swap the extension cable — the armored jacket cracks at the conduit entry point and causes intermittent shorts that look like probe failure.
Fault 2 — High 1× vibration alarm with no process change
Check for shaft runout caused by a buildup of process deposits on the target area. Clean the shaft journal with a lint-free cloth and recheck. Also verify the probe is not picking up electrical noise from a nearby VFD — route the extension cable away from power cables and confirm the shield is grounded at one end only (proximitor end).
Fault 3 — Intermittent OK/NOT OK on the monitor card
Wiggle the MIL-C-5015 connector at the probe body while watching the monitor. If the signal drops, the connector pins have fretting corrosion — common in high-vibration environments. Clean with contact cleaner and apply a thin coat of silicone grease. If the connector body is cracked, the probe must be replaced.
Replacement Procedure (field-condensed):
- Isolate the monitor channel and acknowledge alarms at the 3500 rack before pulling the probe — do not leave the channel in bypass unattended.
- Record the existing gap voltage from the proximitor output before disconnecting (target: −10 VDC ± 0.5 V at 1.0 mm gap).
- Loosen the jam nut and lock nut. Back the probe out slowly — count the turns so you can pre-set the new probe to the same depth as a starting point.
- Install the new 330910-00-12-10-02-00. Thread in to the same turn count, then fine-adjust while monitoring the proximitor output voltage until you reach −10 VDC ± 0.2 V.
- Torque the lock nut to 14 N·m (10 ft·lb) and the jam nut to 20 N·m (15 ft·lb). Do not over-torque — the probe body threads are stainless into aluminum and will gall.
- Verify the matched set: the probe, extension cable, and proximitor must all be 3300 XL 8 mm variants. Mixing 3300 and 3300 XL components shifts the scale factor and will cause false vibration readings.
- Remove bypass, confirm OK status on the monitor, and log the as-left gap voltage in the maintenance record.
Configuration note on firmware: If you are replacing into a 3500/40M or 3500/42M monitor, confirm the channel configuration in the 3500 Rack Configuration Software matches the new probe’s scale factor (200 mV/mil). A mismatch here will not trip an alarm — it will silently report wrong engineering units, which is worse.
Reliability in Harsh Conditions
The 330910-00-12-10-02-00 is not a lab instrument — it lives inside bearing housings, turbine pedestals, and compressor casings where the environment is actively hostile. The 3300 XL platform was designed from the ground up for continuous operation in these conditions:
Vibration: The probe body is machined from 316 stainless steel with a hermetically sealed tip assembly. The integral cable is strain-relieved at the probe body to prevent fatigue cracking at the junction — the most common mechanical failure point on cheaper alternatives. The MIL-spec connector locks positively and does not back out under sustained vibration.
Temperature: With a probe tip rating of +177 °C, this unit handles hot-section bearing pedestals on steam turbines without thermal drift affecting the scale factor. The cable jacket is rated for continuous exposure at elevated ambient temperatures, unlike standard PVC-jacketed probes that soften and crack within months in hot environments.
Moisture and Chemical Exposure: IP67 sealing on the probe body means it survives wash-down events and condensation cycles without ingress. In petrochemical environments where H₂S or hydrocarbon vapors are present, the stainless construction and sealed connector prevent galvanic corrosion that would compromise a carbon-steel or brass-bodied probe within a single turnaround cycle.
Electromagnetic Interference: The eddy-current measurement principle is inherently immune to magnetic field interference from nearby motors or transformers. The coaxial cable construction provides shielding against capacitively coupled noise from VFDs — a critical advantage in modern variable-speed drive installations where EMI is a persistent nuisance for other sensor technologies.
Global Express Logistics
Our dispatch hub is in Xiamen, Fujian — one of China’s primary export ports with direct access to DHL, FedEx, and UPS international express networks. Here is how a typical urgent order moves:
Day 0 — Order Confirmed: Payment or PO received before 14:00 CST triggers same-day pick, pack, and export documentation preparation. Commercial invoice, packing list, and HS code 9026.80 declaration are generated automatically.
Day 0–1 — Customs Clearance: Xiamen Customs processes industrial instrumentation exports under standard HS classification. We pre-declare to avoid holds. DHL Express and FedEx International Priority collect from our facility daily.
Day 1–3 — In Transit: DHL Express reaches most of Europe, the Middle East, and Southeast Asia within 2–3 business days from Xiamen. North America (US/Canada) typically arrives in 3–4 business days. Remote locations in Africa or South America may require 4–5 days.
Destination Customs: We provide a complete commercial invoice with accurate declared value and HS code to facilitate smooth import clearance. For customers in countries with import duty exemptions on industrial instrumentation, we can provide supporting documentation on request.
Tracking: A waybill number is sent to your email within 2 hours of dispatch. You can track in real time via the DHL or FedEx portal. For critical shipments, we recommend DHL Express Time Definite — delivery is guaranteed by a specific time, not just a date.
Emergency freight: If your plant is down and standard express is not fast enough, contact us directly. We have access to next-flight-out courier options from Xiamen Gaoqi International Airport for situations where every hour counts.
