Troubleshooting & Replacement Tips
After ten years of field work on S120 Booksize cabinets, these are the failure patterns and swap pitfalls that actually matter:
Common Fault Codes on a Failing 6SL3353-3AG36-8BA0:
- F30001 / F30002 — DC bus overvoltage or undervoltage. Before condemning the Motor Module, verify the Active Line Module (ALM) is regulating correctly. A failing ALM will kill a new Motor Module within hours.
- F30021 — Ground fault on the motor output. Megger the motor cable and motor winding before installing the replacement. A shorted cable will blow the new IGBT bridge immediately.
- F30024 — Heatsink overtemperature. Check the internal fan — on high-hour units the fan bearing seizes before the power stage fails. Fan replacement is cheaper than a module swap.
- F07900 / A07901 — DRIVE-CLiQ communication fault. Often caused by a damaged CLiQ cable or a failed CLiQ port on the Control Unit, not the Motor Module itself. Swap the CLiQ cable first.
- F30052 — IGBT desaturation / short-circuit. This is a hard power stage failure. The module is unserviceable — replace it.
Step-by-Step Replacement Procedure:
- Safe isolation first. Confirm DC bus voltage is below 50 V using a calibrated meter before touching any power terminals. The DC bus capacitors hold lethal charge for several minutes after mains disconnection.
- Export parameters. Use STARTER or TIA Portal Startdrive to upload the full parameter set from the CU320-2 before removing the faulty module. Save to a project file — not just a RAM backup.
- DRIVE-CLiQ topology note. The S120 Booksize system uses automatic component addressing via DRIVE-CLiQ. When you install the replacement module, the CU320-2 will detect a new component and assign it a Drive Object number. If the topology has changed (e.g., module position in the CLiQ chain), you must re-run the topology detection wizard in STARTER/Startdrive and re-assign the Drive Object to the correct axis.
- Firmware matching. The replacement module must run the same firmware version as the rest of the S120 system. If the new unit ships with a different firmware, update it via STARTER before commissioning. Mismatched firmware between CU and Motor Module causes persistent F01105 faults.
- Motor data re-identification. After replacement, run the motor data identification routine (p1910 = 1 for stationary ID, p1960 = 1 for rotating ID if safe to do so). Even with identical parameters, the new module’s current measurement offsets differ from the old unit.
- Safety function recommissioning. If STO or other Safety Integrated functions are active, the safety parameters are checksummed. After module swap, you must re-accept the safety parameters (p9761 / p9762 acceptance test) and re-validate the safety function before releasing the machine to production.
- First power-on. Bring up the DC bus slowly if a pre-charge circuit is available. Monitor r0026 (DC bus voltage) and r0027 (output current) in the trace function during the first test run.
One thing engineers miss every time: the Booksize Motor Module mounts on a shared DC bus bar. Inspect the bus bar contact surfaces and the module’s DC bus connector for arcing damage or corrosion before installing the replacement. A pitted contact point will cause intermittent F30001 faults on the new module and send you chasing a ghost fault.
Reliability in Harsh Conditions
The SINAMICS S120 Booksize platform was not designed for a climate-controlled server room. It was engineered for the floor — and the 6SL3353-3AG36-8BA0 reflects that.
The power stage uses Siemens-qualified IGBT modules with gate driver circuits designed to withstand the voltage transients common in heavy industrial environments — motor cable reflections, bus bar switching spikes, and ground loops from poorly bonded cable trays. The internal forced-air cooling system is rated for continuous duty at 40 °C ambient, with a thermal model that actively derates output current rather than tripping on overtemperature — keeping your process running at reduced capacity rather than shutting it down hard.
Vibration resistance meets IEC 60068-2-6 (sinusoidal) and IEC 60068-2-27 (shock) test profiles, making it suitable for press-room floors, compactor drives, and mobile equipment enclosures where cabinet vibration is a daily reality. The conformal-coated PCBs inside the control section resist condensation and airborne contaminants — relevant in food processing, paper mills, and coastal installations where humidity cycles are aggressive.
Every unit we ship has passed incoming inspection: visual check of the Siemens factory label and serial number, verification of the holographic security seal, and a functional power-on test. No remarked parts. No refurbished units sold as new. If it leaves our warehouse, it is original Siemens production stock.
