Troubleshooting & Replacement Tips
Symptom: 3500 rack shows “Not OK” on the proximity channel immediately after startup.
Nine times out of ten this is a gap voltage fault. Before condemning the probe, check the driver output voltage at the junction box. You’re looking for approximately −10 VDC at a 1.0 mm air gap on AISI 4140 steel. If the driver reads −24 VDC (rail voltage), the probe coil is open — the 330104 is dead. If it reads 0 VDC, suspect a wiring short or a failed Proximitor driver, not the probe itself.
Replacement procedure — field checklist:
- De-energize and lock out the −24 VDC supply to the Proximitor driver before disconnecting any cables. Eddy-current systems are low voltage but the driver output is live during normal operation.
- Record the existing gap voltage before removal. This gives you a baseline for the new probe installation and confirms the target surface condition hasn’t changed.
- Replace as a matched system. The 330104-08-15-10-02-CN probe is calibrated as a system with its paired extension cable (330130 series) and Proximitor driver (330180 series). If you swap only the probe and reuse an old extension cable, the system scale factor may drift outside the ±1% tolerance required by API 670. When in doubt, replace all three components together.
- Gap setting: Thread the new probe into the bracket and set the air gap to 1.0 mm (40 mil) using a non-ferrous feeler gauge or a calibrated gap-setting tool. Tighten the lock nut to the specified torque — typically 1.7 N·m (15 in-lb) for 10-32 UNF — and verify gap voltage is within −9.5 to −10.5 VDC.
- Cable routing: The 15 cm integral cable on the 330104-08-15-10-02-CN is short by design — it connects directly to the extension cable at the junction box. Ensure the coaxial connector is fully seated and the coupling nut is finger-tight plus one-quarter turn. A loose connector is the single most common cause of intermittent “Not OK” faults after a probe swap.
- Functional verification: With the machine at rest, confirm static gap voltage. Then perform a slow-roll check (typically <600 RPM) and verify the vibration reading is below your slow-roll threshold. Only then clear the Not OK and return the channel to normal monitoring.
Common fault codes on Bently Nevada 3500 racks:
- Not OK (NO) — solid: Gap voltage outside the driver’s linear range. Check gap, probe continuity, and cable connections.
- Not OK (NO) — intermittent: Loose coaxial connector, damaged cable armor causing intermittent short, or thermal cycling at the probe tip. Inspect the 15 cm integral cable for kinks or crush damage.
- High vibration alarm with no process change: Probe tip contamination (oil varnish, metallic debris). Clean the tip with isopropyl alcohol and re-gap. If the reading doesn’t normalize, the probe coil may have been damaged by a rub event.
- Scale factor drift: Mismatched probe/extension cable/driver combination. Verify all three components are from the same 3300 XL 8mm calibrated set.
Reliability in Harsh Conditions
The 3300 XL 8mm system was not designed for a laboratory. It was designed for the inside of a bearing housing on a 50 MW gas turbine running at 3,000 RPM in a 45°C ambient with oil mist, high-frequency vibration, and electromagnetic interference from adjacent VFDs. The 330104-08-15-10-02-CN reflects that design intent at every level.
The probe body is constructed from 316 stainless steel, providing corrosion resistance in wet gas and sour service environments. The integral armored cable uses a stainless steel braid over a PTFE-insulated coaxial core — resistant to oil, steam condensate, and the mechanical abrasion that destroys standard instrumentation cable within months in a turbine enclosure. The probe tip is potted with a high-temperature epoxy compound rated to +177°C, which means it survives the thermal cycling that occurs every time a steam turbine starts and shuts down.
Vibration immunity is built into the eddy-current measurement principle itself. Unlike piezoelectric accelerometers, the proximity probe has no moving parts and no resonant frequency to worry about in the measurement bandwidth. The probe body is designed to be rigidly mounted, and the 10-32 UNF reverse-mount thread provides a secure, repeatable installation that doesn’t loosen under the continuous vibration loads present in rotating machinery bearing housings.
In high-humidity environments — coastal facilities, offshore platforms, tropical process plants — the sealed probe construction prevents moisture ingress that would otherwise detune the coil and shift the scale factor. Units stored in our Xiamen warehouse are kept in climate-controlled conditions and individually packaged in anti-static, moisture-barrier bags to preserve this integrity until the moment of installation.
