GE UR9EV CPU Module — Stop the Clock on Your Substation Outage
Every minute a protection relay is offline, your substation is exposed. Breaker miscoordination, unprotected feeders, utility penalty clauses ticking — the financial bleed is real. The GE UR9EV CPU Module is the brain of the UR Series platform, and when it fails, nothing else in that chassis matters. We stock it. We ship it today. From Xiamen to your site via DHL Express — typically 3–5 business days to most global destinations.
This is not a refurbished pull. This is an original GE Grid Solutions UR9EV, verified functional, firmware-confirmed, and packed in ESD-safe materials before it leaves our warehouse. If your relay is down, this is the fastest path back to protection.

Troubleshooting & Replacement Tips
The UR9EV fails in predictable ways. Here is what field experience tells you before you even pull the module:
Common Failure Signatures:
- Relay front panel HMI blank or frozen — CPU has lost boot sequence. Check for ERR LED on the module faceplate. If solid red, the processor has halted. Power cycle first; if it does not recover, the CPU board is the culprit.
- COMM FAIL alarm on SCADA with no IED response — The UR9EV handles all Ethernet and serial comms. A failed CPU will drop all protocol sessions simultaneously. Distinguish from a network switch fault by checking the relay’s local HMI — if the HMI is also unresponsive, the CPU is the issue, not the network.
- Protection elements not operating / relay in TEST mode stuck — Corrupted firmware or failed DSP co-processor. EnerVista will report a firmware checksum error on connection attempt.
- Intermittent relay restarts (watchdog resets) — Electrolytic capacitor degradation on the CPU board, common in relays operating above 45°C ambient for extended periods. Watchdog reset events are logged in the relay’s event recorder — pull the log before swapping the module.
Replacement Procedure — Field Checklist:
- 1. Export relay settings file via EnerVista UR Setup before any hardware change. Settings are stored on the CPU — a failed CPU may not allow export, so retrieve from your last backup.
- 2. Note firmware version currently running (visible on HMI under PRODUCT INFO if accessible). The replacement UR9EV must run the same major firmware version to avoid settings incompatibility. Downgrading firmware is not supported by GE.
- 3. De-energize the relay — remove DC control power and confirm all LEDs are extinguished. The UR chassis does not support hot-swap of the CPU module.
- 4. Seat the replacement UR9EV firmly — the module uses a card-edge connector. Partial seating causes intermittent comms faults that are difficult to diagnose. Apply firm, even pressure until the front panel is flush with the chassis.
- 5. Restore settings file via EnerVista immediately after power-up. The replacement module ships with factory defaults — do not leave it in service without your site-specific settings loaded.
- 6. Verify firmware version post-replacement. If the replacement module carries a different firmware build, upgrade or downgrade as required before settings restore.
- 7. Run a functional test — inject test currents/voltages via a relay test set and confirm all protection elements operate per the settings file. Do not return the relay to service without a functional verification.
Configuration Notes: The UR9EV does not use physical DIP switches or rotary address selectors — all addressing (IEC 61850 IED name, DNP3 address, Modbus slave ID) is configured in software via EnerVista. Ensure your settings backup captures the communications configuration block. If the relay was previously configured for IEC 61850, the SCL/CID file must also be re-imported after settings restore.
Reliability in Harsh Conditions
Substations are not server rooms. The UR9EV is engineered for environments that would destroy consumer-grade electronics within weeks.
- Thermal Cycling Endurance — Designed to operate continuously from -20°C to +60°C with no derating. The PCB uses industrial-grade components rated for extended temperature ranges, not commercial-grade parts that drift out of spec at 55°C.
- Vibration & Shock Resistance — Compliant with IEC 60255-21 Class 2 vibration and shock requirements. The module withstands the mechanical stress of switchgear operation, seismic events, and transportation without solder joint fatigue.
- EMC Immunity — Tested to IEC 61000-4 series for conducted and radiated immunity. The UR9EV operates correctly in the presence of high-frequency switching transients, power line harmonics, and electrostatic discharge events common in HV switchyards.
- Humidity & Condensation — Conformal coating on critical PCB areas provides protection against condensation in substations without climate control. Rated for 5–95% RH non-condensing continuous operation.
- Electrical Fast Transient (EFT) Immunity — Meets IEC 61000-4-4 Level 4 (4 kV peak) — the highest standard for protection relay environments where CT secondary circuits can generate significant transient energy during fault conditions.
