Troubleshooting & Replacement Tips

How do you know the AMC board is the culprit? On a DCS800, the AMC board failure signature is usually one of these: fault code F507 (Internal fault), F508 (AMC communication loss), or the drive powers up but refuses to accept a speed reference — the control panel shows parameter access but the drive won’t run. If the SDCS-PIN power board and thyristor stack check out clean, the AMC is your prime suspect.

Before you pull the board:

  • Upload the full parameter set to the CDP control panel or DCS800 PC tool. The AMC board does not store parameters — they live in the SDCS-CON memory unit or CDP panel. Confirm your backup is readable before proceeding.
  • Note the firmware version displayed in parameter 9.01 (Firmware version). The replacement board must run the same major firmware revision. Mismatched firmware between AMC and SDCS-CON can cause boot loops or parameter incompatibility faults.
  • Power down the drive completely. Wait a minimum of 5 minutes for DC bus capacitors to discharge. Verify with a multimeter across the DC bus terminals — do not skip this step.
  • Ground yourself with an ESD wrist strap before touching the board. The dual DSP on this board is sensitive to electrostatic discharge. One careless touch can kill a board that was otherwise fine.

Swap procedure:

  • Photograph the ribbon cable and connector routing before disconnecting anything. The SDCS-AMC-DC-2COAT has multiple connectors — X1, X2, X3, X4 — and incorrect reconnection will cause immediate faults on power-up.
  • Release the board retention clips and slide the AMC board out of the drive chassis guide rails. Do not force it — if it resists, check for a locking screw on the front panel bracket.
  • Seat the replacement board firmly until both retention clips engage. A partially seated board causes intermittent communication faults that are extremely difficult to diagnose.
  • Reconnect all cables in reverse order of removal. Verify the SDCS-COM adapter (if fitted) is reseated on the AMC board’s expansion connector — this is the most commonly missed step.
  • Power up and restore parameters from your CDP backup. The drive should boot to Ready state within 30 seconds. If it faults immediately on F507, recheck the SDCS-CON memory unit connection.

2COAT vs standard AMC board: The conformal coating variant is a direct electrical substitute for the uncoated SDCS-AMC-DC. You can install a 2COAT board in a drive that previously ran the standard version — no parameter changes required. The reverse is also true, but only if your environment permits reduced moisture protection.

Firmware matching: ABB released multiple firmware branches for DCS800 (e.g., AMCDC_APPL_x.xx). If your replacement board ships with a different firmware version than your original, use the DCS800 PC tool to flash the correct version before commissioning. Running mismatched firmware is the single most common cause of post-replacement faults in the field.

Reliability in Harsh Conditions

The 2COAT designation is not a marketing label — it is a manufacturing specification. The conformal coating is applied post-assembly using a selective coating process that covers PCB traces, solder joints, passive components, and connector bases while leaving mating surfaces clear. The result is a board that can withstand sustained exposure to conditions that would corrode an uncoated PCB within months.

In steel mill environments, the AMC board faces a combination of electromagnetic interference from thyristor firing, airborne metallic dust, and thermal cycling as the drive room heats and cools with production shifts. The dual DSP architecture is housed in shielded packages, and the board layout routes high-frequency switching signals away from analog feedback paths — a design discipline that directly translates to measurement accuracy under electrical noise.

Marine and offshore installations expose drive electronics to salt-laden air with relative humidity that regularly exceeds 80%. The IPC-CC-830 compliant coating on the SDCS-AMC-DC-2COAT provides a moisture barrier rated for these conditions. Field data from offshore platform installations shows MTBF figures that are measurably higher for 2COAT boards versus standard variants in the same drive cabinets.

Chemical plant environments add corrosive vapor exposure to the equation. Hydrogen sulfide, chlorine compounds, and solvent vapors attack copper traces and tin-lead solder joints aggressively. The conformal coat acts as a chemical barrier, slowing the electrochemical corrosion process that causes trace resistance to rise and eventually open-circuit. For drives in these environments, specifying the 2COAT variant is not optional — it is the difference between a 2-year and a 10-year service interval.

Vibration is the third axis of stress. The DCS800 is often installed in mobile equipment — mining shovels, ship cranes, rail-mounted gantries — where the drive cabinet sees continuous low-frequency vibration. The AMC board’s through-hole and SMD components are soldered to IPC Class 3 standards, and the conformal coat adds mechanical damping to solder joint interfaces, reducing the risk of fatigue cracking under cyclic mechanical load.

Global Express Logistics

Our warehouse is in Xiamen, China — one of the country’s primary export hubs with direct access to DHL Express, FedEx International Priority, and UPS Worldwide Express gateways. When you place an order before 16:00 CST, the board ships the same day. No exceptions, no excuses.

Transit times from Xiamen (typical):

  • Southeast Asia (Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia, Vietnam): 2–3 business days via DHL Express
  • Middle East (UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar): 3–4 business days via FedEx International Priority
  • Europe (Germany, UK, Netherlands, Poland): 3–5 business days via DHL Express
  • North America (USA, Canada, Mexico): 4–6 business days via FedEx International Priority
  • South America (Brazil, Chile, Argentina): 5–8 business days via DHL Express
  • Africa (South Africa, Nigeria, Egypt): 5–7 business days via DHL Express

Every shipment includes a tracking number issued within 2 hours of dispatch. Export documentation — commercial invoice, packing list, certificate of origin — is prepared in parallel with packing and transmitted electronically before the courier collects. For customers in countries with strict import controls on electronic components, we can provide an HS code declaration and end-user statement to support customs clearance.

The board is packed in an anti-static bag, placed in a foam-lined rigid carton, and sealed with tamper-evident tape. A humidity indicator card is included for long-haul shipments. The outer carton is labeled with fragile and ESD-sensitive markings. Insurance is included on all shipments above USD 500 at no additional charge.

For customers with existing freight forwarder relationships, we can hand off to your nominated carrier at our Xiamen facility. For urgent shipments where standard express is not fast enough, we have access to charter courier services for next-flight-out delivery to major international airports.
