Troubleshooting & Replacement Tips

The SDCS-POW-1 fails in predictable ways. Here is what you will see on the drive panel and what it actually means on the bench:

Fault F-16 / F-17 (Internal Supply Undervoltage): The SDCS-CON-2 or CON-3 control board loses its logic rail. The drive trips immediately at power-on, sometimes before the keypad even initializes. Measure the +5 V and ±15 V test points on the POW-1 board itself — if any rail is more than 5% out of spec, the board is the culprit, not the control board.

Intermittent Fault / Random Trips: Electrolytic capacitors on the POW-1 age out in high-ambient environments. You may see the drive run fine for 20 minutes then trip on a spurious fault. Capacitor ESR rises with temperature — the fault appears only when the drive is warm. Do not waste time re-tuning speed loops. Replace the POW-1.

Replacement Procedure (field-verified steps):

  • Isolate and lock out the DCS 400 drive. Verify DC bus is fully discharged — minimum 5 minutes after main contactor opens. Use a calibrated meter, not the drive display.
  • Remove the drive front cover. The SDCS-POW-1 is located in the lower-left card slot of the control section, directly below the SDCS-CON board.
  • Disconnect the multi-pin edge connector. Note the keying tab orientation — the replacement installs in one direction only, but confirm before seating.
  • There are no DIP switches or address settings on the SDCS-POW-1 itself. It is a passive supply board — no firmware, no configuration. Seat the new board, reconnect the connector, and restore power.
  • On first power-up, verify all supply rails at the test points before enabling the drive. The CON board will self-initialize once rails are stable.
  • If the drive was previously running a custom parameter set, no re-parameterization is required — parameters are stored on the CON board’s EEPROM, not on the POW-1.
  • Run a no-load test at minimum speed reference before reconnecting the motor. Confirm no faults for at least 10 minutes of continuous operation.

Firmware Note: The SDCS-POW-1 carries no firmware. However, if you are also replacing the SDCS-CON-2 or CON-3 board simultaneously, verify the firmware version on the new CON board matches your application’s parameter set. Mismatched firmware can cause unexpected behavior on legacy DCS 400 installations.

The edge connector is gold-plated to resist oxidation in humid coastal or marine-adjacent installations.
