Common failure signatures of a dying 1746-P4:

  • Processor fault code 0001 (power supply fault) appearing intermittently before a hard shutdown — this is the 1746-P4 entering thermal protection, not a processor bug.
  • Erratic I/O behavior on modules in slots 6–12 while slots 1–5 remain stable — classic sign of a 5 VDC rail sagging under load, usually caused by aging capacitors in the PSU.
  • The FAULT LED on the processor illuminates at startup but clears after a cold restart — the PSU is failing to hold voltage during inrush. Replace before it fails completely mid-shift.

Step-by-step replacement procedure:

  1. De-energize and lock out the panel. Confirm zero energy with a calibrated meter before touching the chassis.
  2. Record the processor memory — upload the current program to RSLogix 500 or verify the processor has battery-backed RAM. The 1746-P4 swap itself does not erase processor memory, but a power interruption during the swap can trigger a memory fault if the battery is weak.
