Troubleshooting & Replacement Tips

Ten years of field calls teach you the same lesson: most 3300 XL failures are not the probe — they’re the driver or the extension cable. Before you pull the transducer, run through this sequence.

Step 1 — Isolate the fault zone. Disconnect the extension cable at the driver end. Measure DC output voltage at the driver output terminal. A healthy driver with no probe connected should read approximately –18 VDC (full-gap, open-circuit). If you read 0 V or a rail voltage, the driver is dead — not the probe.

Step 2 — Check the extension cable. Eddy-current systems are extremely sensitive to cable impedance. A single nick in the coaxial shield, a corroded BNC centre pin, or a kinked cable near a conduit entry will shift the scale factor by 5–15% and trigger false vibration alarms. Measure shield continuity and centre-conductor resistance end-to-end. Anything above 2 Ω on the centre conductor for a 20 ft run is suspect.

Step 3 — Verify gap voltage before mechanical removal. With the machine at rest, the probe gap voltage should sit between –9 V and –11 V for a nominal 1.0 mm installation gap. If it reads outside –2 V to –18 V, the probe coil is open or shorted. Now you have confirmed cause — replace the transducer.

Step 4 — Mechanical replacement procedure. De-energise the monitor rack channel before disconnecting. Remove the locknut and back the probe out slowly — do not rotate the cable assembly. Thread the new 330101-00-18-20-12-05 in by hand until probe tip contacts the shaft, then back off to your target gap (typically 50 mil / 1.27 mm for 8 mm probes). Tighten locknut to 2.3 N·m. Reconnect extension cable — verify BNC seating is positive and the coupling nut is finger-tight plus one-quarter turn.

Step 5 — Post-installation verification. Power up the channel. Confirm gap voltage is within the linear range. Rotate the shaft by hand and verify the monitor displays a clean orbit with no noise floor spikes above 0.5 mil pk-pk. If you see high-frequency noise, recheck cable routing — keep extension cable away from VFD power cables by at least 300 mm.

Common fault codes on 3300/3500 monitors:

  • OK LED off, no alarm — gap voltage outside –2 V to –18 V window; check probe gap and cable continuity.
  • Danger relay energised at startup — monitor channel not bypassed during installation; use the rack bypass switch before powering the new probe.
  • Erratic vibration reading, machine at rest — EMI coupling from adjacent power cables or a grounding loop in the cable shield; verify single-point shield grounding at the driver end only.
  • Scale factor drift over temperature — non-standard target material (stainless, titanium); request a material-specific calibration curve from us at [email protected].

Configuration note — 3500 rack compatibility: The 330101-00-18-20-12-05 is electrically compatible with 3500/42M and 3500/44M monitor modules. Confirm the driver part number matches the monitor’s expected driver type in the rack configuration software (System 1 or Rack Configuration Utility). A driver mismatch will cause the channel to report a configuration fault even with a perfect probe installation.

Reliability in Harsh Conditions

The 3300 XL platform was not designed for a clean lab. It was designed for the inside of a gas turbine enclosure at 160 °C, a refinery compressor train running 24/7 in a tropical climate, and a boiler feed pump pit where condensation is a daily reality.

The probe body is machined from 316 stainless steel with a PEEK tip insert — chemically resistant to most process fluids including H₂S-bearing hydrocarbons. The armoured cable jacket on the -12-05 configuration uses a stainless-steel braid over a PTFE-insulated coaxial core, providing mechanical protection against abrasion and crush loads in cable trays while maintaining the electrical characteristics the driver expects.

Vibration endurance: the probe assembly is rated to 20 g continuous sinusoidal vibration across 10–2,000 Hz per IEC 60068-2-6. In practice, we have seen these probes outlast the machines they monitor in high-cycle fatigue environments — the failure mode is almost always the cable termination, not the probe coil itself. Inspect BNC connectors annually in high-vibration installations.

Humidity and ingress: IP67 rating on the probe assembly means full immersion to 1 m for 30 minutes. In practice, the weak point is the junction between the probe body and the armoured cable — ensure the thread sealant is intact and the locknut is torqued correctly. A loose locknut in a wet environment will wick moisture into the coaxial cable and destroy the dielectric within weeks.

All units we ship are inspected for physical integrity of the cable jacket, BNC connector seating, and probe tip condition. We do not ship units with visible cable damage, corroded connectors, or probe tips that show impact marks — those go straight to scrap.

Global Express Logistics

Our warehouse is in Xiamen, Fujian — one of China’s primary export hubs with direct DHL and FedEx gateway access. Here is what the logistics chain looks like from your order to your hands:

  • Order confirmed before 14:00 CST — same-day dispatch. DHL Express or FedEx International Priority, your choice.
  • Transit times (typical): Southeast Asia 1–2 days | Middle East 2–3 days | Europe 3–4 days | North America 3–5 days | South America / Africa 5–7 days.
  • Documentation: Commercial invoice, packing list, and Certificate of Conformance ship with every order. HS code 9031809090 declared. For orders requiring an export licence or end-user certificate, contact us 48 hours in advance.
  • Customs clearance: We pre-clear shipments with accurate declared values and correct HS codes. We do not under-declare — it creates delays and liability for you. If your country requires an import permit for instrumentation, advise us at order time.
  • Tracking: AWB number sent within 2 hours of dispatch. Real-time tracking link provided via email and WhatsApp.
  • Emergency freight: For genuine plant emergencies, we can arrange hand-carry courier from Xiamen to your nearest major airport. Contact us directly on WhatsApp for this option — it is not listed on the website because it requires case-by-case coordination.

We have shipped to refineries in Saudi Arabia, power plants in Vietnam, paper mills in Finland, and compressor stations in Canada. The process is the same every time: fast, documented, and traceable.
