Product Overview

330104-00-18-05-01-00: Your Compressor Is Down — Every Minute Costs You Money

You already know the number. Whether it’s a gas turbine tripping on high vibration, a centrifugal compressor locked out by a NOT OK fault, or a steam turbine that won’t clear its axial position alarm — the production loss clock starts the moment the machine goes down. The Bently Nevada 330104-00-18-05-01-00 is the 3300 XL 8mm proximity transducer system your protection loop needs, and it is on the shelf in Xiamen right now. We don’t quote lead times in weeks. We quote in hours.

This is a complete proximity transducer system: 8mm eddy-current probe with 18-inch probe cable, paired with a 5-metre extension cable and integral Proximitor driver — the full assembly that plugs directly into your 3300 or 3500 series monitor rack. No sourcing three separate line items. No waiting for a factory build. One part number, one shipment, machine back online.

Troubleshooting & Replacement Tips

The 330104-00-18-05-01-00 is a complete system — probe, extension cable, and integral driver ship as a matched set. That matters for troubleshooting: when you have a fault, you need to isolate which element of the system has failed before you condemn the whole assembly.

Fault pattern 1 — NOT OK LED on the Proximitor, gap voltage reads rail (–24 V or 0 V): This is almost always an open circuit in the probe cable or extension cable, not the probe tip itself. Disconnect the extension cable at the Proximitor input. If the NOT OK clears and voltage returns to a reasonable level with a shorting plug, the fault is in the extension cable. If NOT OK persists, disconnect at the probe end of the extension — a recovered voltage here points to the probe cable. A rail reading with everything disconnected means the Proximitor driver itself has failed.

Fault pattern 2 — Intermittent NOT OK, especially during machine startup or thermal cycling: Nine times out of ten this is a cracked solder joint or fretting corrosion at the probe-to-extension cable connector. On the 330104 series, the connector is at the 18-inch mark. Flex the cable near the connector while watching the gap voltage on your DVM. A voltage shift of more than 0.5 V confirms a mechanical fault at that joint. Do not attempt to repair — replace the assembly.

Fault pattern 3 — Elevated 1× vibration reading that wasn’t present before maintenance: The probe was disturbed during the outage. Check the air gap first. The 8mm probe on this system has a linear range of 80–180 mil (2.0–4.6 mm). Target gap is typically set at 50 mil (1.27 mm) from the probe tip to the shaft surface, giving a nominal output of approximately –10.5 VDC. If your gap voltage is reading –14 V or higher, the probe has been pushed too far from the shaft — re-gap and re-check.

Replacement procedure — field-proven sequence:

  1. LOTO the machine. Record the existing gap voltage and 1× amplitude from the monitor before disconnecting anything — this is your baseline for the new system.
  2. Disconnect the extension cable at the Proximitor first. Label the cable with the channel number before you pull it — on a 3500 rack with 16 channels, mixed-up cables cause more post-maintenance faults than failed probes.
  3. Remove the probe from the bracket. The 330104 probe uses a standard M10×1.0 thread. Count the turns out and note the depth — you will replicate this on installation.
  4. Install the new probe to the same thread depth. Do not apply thread sealant or anti-seize to the probe threads — it changes the thermal expansion behavior and shifts your gap calibration at operating temperature.
  5. Set the air gap to 50 mil (1.27 mm) using a non-ferrous feeler gauge. Connect the extension cable and verify the Proximitor output reads –10.5 VDC ± 1 V. If it reads outside this band, adjust the probe depth in 2-mil increments.
  6. The integral driver in the 330104-00-18-05-01-00 requires no DIP switch configuration and no firmware — all channel configuration (OK limits, full-scale range, alarm setpoints) resides in the 3300 or 3500 monitor rack. After probe replacement, verify the rack channel configuration has not been altered: check the gap voltage OK limits, the full-scale vibration range, and the alarm setpoints against your last documented configuration.
  7. Perform a slow-roll check at barring gear speed. Runout should be below 25 µm (1 mil) for a well-machined shaft. If runout is elevated, the issue is the shaft surface, not the probe.
  8. Clear alarms, return to service, and log the replacement in your CMMS with the new assembly serial number and the post-installation gap voltage reading.

Configuration note on the 3500/42M monitor: When replacing a probe on a 3500/42M channel, the monitor will generate a configuration mismatch alarm if the transducer type stored in the rack does not match the installed hardware. Navigate to the channel configuration in System 1 or the 3500 Rack Configuration Software and confirm the transducer type is set to “3300 XL 8mm” with 200 mV/mil sensitivity. No re-flashing of the probe or driver is required — the driver is passive from a configuration standpoint.

Reliability in Harsh Conditions

The 3300 XL probe body is machined from 316L stainless steel with a PEEK tip housing. This combination was not chosen for cost — it was chosen because PEEK maintains its dimensional stability from –35 °C to +250 °C and resists the full range of process chemicals encountered in petrochemical service: H₂S, ammonia, aromatic hydrocarbons, and caustic wash solutions. The probe’s sensitivity curve does not drift measurably across this chemical exposure range, which matters when your protection system is making trip decisions based on a 1 mil change in shaft position.

The 5-metre extension cable on the 330104-00-18-05-01-00 uses a coaxial construction with a fluoropolymer jacket rated for continuous service at +200 °C. In practice, this means the cable survives being routed across a hot compressor casing without the jacket softening and allowing the shield to contact the center conductor — a failure mode that produces a slow, insidious increase in system noise floor rather than a hard fault, and one that is notoriously difficult to diagnose without a replacement cable on hand.

Vibration qualification for the 3300 XL series is 20 g sinusoidal across 10–2,000 Hz per IEC 60068-2-6. The probe’s integral cable is strain-relieved at the probe body with a stainless steel ferrule — the most common mechanical failure point on competitive designs is cable fatigue at the probe exit, and Bently Nevada addressed this in the 3300 XL design specifically because field data from the 3300 series showed it was the leading cause of probe replacement in high-vibration installations.

Humidity and condensation are handled by the fully potted probe body. The only potential ingress point is the probe-to-extension cable connector. In outdoor installations or anywhere wash-down is routine, apply a thin bead of silicone RTV around the mated connector body after installation. This takes 30 seconds and eliminates the most common cause of intermittent NOT OK faults in humid environments.
