Troubleshooting & Replacement Tips

After ten years of field work, these are the failure modes I see most often with 3300 XL proximity systems — and the mistakes that turn a two-hour swap into a two-day nightmare.

1. Confirm the fault is the probe, not the driver or extension cable. Before you pull the probe, measure the driver output voltage at the monitor card terminal. A healthy gap signal sits between –10 VDC and –18 VDC at normal operating clearance. If you’re reading –24 VDC (open circuit) or 0 VDC (short), disconnect the extension cable at the driver and measure again. If the fault clears, the extension cable is the culprit — not the probe. Ordering the wrong component costs you another 48 hours.

2. Gap setting is non-negotiable. The 330104-00-24-10-02-CN has a linear range of 0–90 mil. Optimal operating gap for radial vibration is typically 50 mil (1.27 mm) — center of the linear range. Use a calibrated gap tool or a digital micrometer. Do not eyeball it. A 10-mil error at installation shifts your zero reference and will trigger nuisance trips or, worse, mask real vibration.

3. Target material matters. Standard calibration is for AISI 4140 steel. If your shaft is 316 stainless or Inconel, the sensitivity curve shifts. You’ll need a recalibration factor from Bently Nevada or a factory-calibrated variant. Running the wrong calibration on a stainless shaft can cause a 15–20% sensitivity error — enough to miss a developing bearing fault.

4. Series matching — do not mix 3300 and 3300 XL. The 3300 XL 8 mm system (probe + extension cable + driver) must be a matched set from the same series. Mixing a 3300 5 mm probe with a 3300 XL driver introduces a calibration offset that the monitor rack cannot compensate for. Check the driver label before you order.

5. Monitor rack configuration after replacement. After installing the new probe, navigate to the 3500/40M or 3500/42M card configuration in the System 1 software. Verify the Proximitor input range is set to match the –24 VDC supply and 200 mV/mil sensitivity. If a previous technician modified the card configuration, a mismatch here will cause the monitor to report incorrect vibration amplitude even with a perfectly installed probe.

6. Common fault codes on 3500 Series monitors:

  • OK LED off / Not OK relay energized: Gap out of range — check physical clearance first, then probe continuity.
  • Danger alarm with no process change: Probe tip contamination (oil, metallic debris) or intermittent extension cable connection. Clean the probe tip and re-torque the cable connectors.
  • Erratic vibration reading at low speed: Electrical runout exceeding the monitor’s compensation limit — perform a slow-roll vector subtraction in System 1.
  • –24 VDC at driver output terminal: Open circuit — extension cable break or probe coil failure. Replace the probe.

Reliability in Harsh Conditions

The 330104-00-24-10-02-CN is not a lab instrument. It is built to survive the environment directly adjacent to a spinning shaft running at 3,000–15,000 RPM, inside a machine casing where temperatures can exceed 100 °C and vibration levels routinely exceed 50 g. The stainless steel armored cable resists abrasion from machine housing edges and protects the coaxial signal cable from electromagnetic interference generated by high-current motor drives and variable frequency drives nearby. The IP67-rated probe assembly sheds condensation, lube oil mist, and process gas ingress without signal degradation. The probe coil assembly is encapsulated in a chemically resistant housing that withstands the hydrocarbon and H₂S environments common in upstream oil and gas. We have shipped this part to offshore platforms in the South China Sea, to cement plant kiln drives in Inner Mongolia, and to LNG liquefaction trains in Qatar — it performs in all of them.
