Troubleshooting & Replacement Tips
Fault Scenario 1 — Monitor shows GAP voltage out of range (typically below −2V or above −18V): Before condemning the probe, check the extension cable first. The 330130/330140 extension cables are the most common failure point in high-vibration installations. Disconnect at the Proximitor junction, measure probe output directly. If GAP voltage normalises, replace the extension cable, not the probe. If it stays out of range with a known-good cable, the probe tip is damaged or the coil is open — replace the 330904-00-25-10-02-00.
Fault Scenario 2 — Intermittent 1X vibration spike, no process change: This is almost always a loose probe tip or a cracked probe body from thermal cycling. Torque spec on the probe locknut is 5.6 N·m (50 in-lb). Check it before pulling the probe. If the body shows any crack at the tip-to-cable transition, replace immediately — a failed probe in a turbine bearing housing is a machinery protection failure, not just an instrumentation fault.
Replacement Procedure (field-expedient):
- De-energise the Proximitor sensor (330180 NSv) before disconnecting the probe. Hot-swapping can damage the Proximitor input stage.
- Record the existing GAP voltage before removal — this is your baseline for the new probe setup. Target GAP: −10.0 VDC ±0.5 V for most 3300 NSv installations.
- Install the replacement 330904-00-25-10-02-00. Set probe-to-target gap to 1.0 mm (40 mil) using a feeler gauge at the shaft. This puts you in the centre of the linear range.
- Re-energise the Proximitor and verify GAP voltage. Adjust gap in 0.1 mm increments until GAP reads within spec. Do not rely on the monitor’s OK relay alone — verify with a calibrated voltmeter at the Proximitor output.
- Run the machine at low speed and confirm 1X amplitude and phase are consistent with historical baseline. A new probe with identical gap should reproduce baseline within ±5%.
- No firmware update or address configuration is required for the 330904 series — the probe is passive. All signal conditioning is in the Proximitor (330180). If the Proximitor was also replaced, verify the system sensitivity setting matches: 200 mV/mil for the 25 mm probe.
Common Mistake: Engineers sometimes install a 330903 (8 mm tip) as a temporary replacement. The 8 mm probe has a different linear range and sensitivity — the 3300 NSv monitor will not alarm correctly and you risk a missed trip. Only use the 330904-00-25-10-02-00 or a verified 25 mm NSv-compatible probe.
Reliability in Harsh Conditions
The 330904-00-25-10-02-00 was engineered for the environments where most sensors fail. The probe body is constructed from 316 stainless steel with a PEEK tip housing — chemically resistant to the lube oil, seal gas, and process condensate found in compressor and turbine bearing housings. The integral cable uses a fluoropolymer jacket rated to 200 °C continuous, with a stainless armour braid that handles the flex fatigue from machine vibration without cracking the insulation over time.
Vibration immunity is not a marketing claim here — the probe is designed to measure vibration, so it must be immune to the mechanical noise of its own mounting. The tip assembly is potted and hermetically sealed; there is no internal mechanical joint that can loosen under cyclic loading. Units are tested to IEC 60068-2-6 (sinusoidal vibration) and IEC 60068-2-64 (random vibration) as part of the 3300 NSv system qualification.
Humidity and condensation are handled by the fully sealed construction — IP67 at the probe body. In offshore and coastal installations where salt fog is a concern, the stainless housing provides adequate corrosion resistance. The cable connector (type 02) uses gold-plated contacts and a moisture-excluding boot; inspect and replace the boot if it shows cracking during any scheduled maintenance window.
High-temperature installations: the standard 330904-00-25-10-02-00 is rated to 177 °C at the probe tip. For steam turbine applications where bearing housing temperatures exceed this, specify the 330905 high-temperature variant. Do not attempt to use the standard probe above its rated temperature — the PEEK tip will deform and calibration will shift permanently.
