Ten years of field work teaches you that most WPLAC-30 failures fall into three categories. Here’s what to check before you pull the trigger on a replacement — and what to watch when you install the new one.

Common Fault Indicators:

• RUN LED off, ERR LED solid red: CPU self-diagnostic failure. Power cycle first. If fault persists after two cycles, the module’s internal RAM or firmware has corrupted — replacement is the fastest path forward.
• Communication timeout on host link: Check RS-232C/RS-485 wiring and termination resistors first. If the port is physically intact but the module won’t respond to SX-Programmer, the WPLAC-30’s comm ASIC is likely failed.
• Intermittent I/O scan errors (ERR blinks): Often caused by backplane connector oxidation or a failing module. Reseat the module first. If errors return within 24 hours, swap the module.
• Battery alarm (BAT LED amber): This is a separate issue — replace the lithium backup battery (CR2032 or equivalent per your revision) before swapping the CPU module. A dead battery causes program loss on power cycle, not module failure.

Replacement Procedure — Field Checklist:

• ☐ Back up the current program via SX-Programmer before powering down (if the module is still partially responsive).
• ☐ Note all DIP switch positions on the existing WPLAC-30 before removal. Photograph them. Station address, baud rate, and communication mode are set here — a mismatch will cause the replacement to come up in the wrong comm mode.
• ☐ Power down the entire rack. The WPLAC-30 is not hot-swappable.
• ☐ Ground yourself. ESD damage to the CMOS logic on this board is permanent and non-warranty.
