Product Overview

Pepperl+Fuchs KCD2-SCD-EX1 – Stop the Clock on Your Solenoid Loop Failure

A tripped solenoid barrier in a Zone 1 ESD loop is not a maintenance ticket — it is a production halt. Every hour a reactor feed isolation valve stays de-energised because its barrier has failed costs real money: lost throughput, emergency labour, and potential SIS bypass documentation. The Pepperl+Fuchs KCD2-SCD-EX1 is held in stock at our Xiamen warehouse specifically for this scenario. We ship DHL/FedEx express the same business day your order is confirmed. No lead-time negotiation, no factory back-order queue.

The KCD2-SCD-EX1 is a single-channel, galvanically isolated solenoid driver barrier from Pepperl+Fuchs’s KCD2 series. It interfaces a 24 VDC safe-area PLC or DCS digital output to an intrinsically safe field solenoid valve or binary actuator located in ATEX/IECEx Zone 0, Zone 1, or Zone 2 explosive atmospheres — including the most demanding IIC gas group (hydrogen, acetylene). Triple galvanic isolation between field, control, and power rails eliminates ground-loop faults that plague large plant earthing systems. At 12.5 mm wide, it slots directly into an existing KCD2 DIN-rail segment without disturbing adjacent wiring.

Troubleshooting & Replacement Tips

Field experience with KCD2-SCD-EX1 failures clusters around four root causes. Work through them in order before pulling the module:

1. Power rail fault — check K-Bus feed first. The KCD2 series draws supply from the K-Bus connector on the left side of the module. If the adjacent KFD2-EB2 power feed module has a blown fuse or its green LED is off, every module on that segment will appear dead. Measure 24 VDC across pins 14(+) and 15(–) on the suspect KCD2-SCD-EX1 before condemning the barrier itself. A missing supply voltage here is a segment-level fault, not a module fault.

2. Output LED on, solenoid not actuating — entity parameter mismatch. The yellow output LED confirms the safe-area PLC output is driving the barrier correctly. If the field solenoid still does not energise, measure the field-side terminal voltage (pins 3 and 4). If it reads near Uo (27 V) with no load but collapses under load, the solenoid’s coil resistance is too low, drawing current beyond Io (96 mA). Verify the solenoid’s IS entity parameters: Vmax ≥ 27.4 V, Imax ≥ 96 mA, and coil resistance ≥ 285 Ω at 24 VDC nominal.

3. Intermittent trip in high-humidity environments — terminal oxidation. The plug-in screw terminals on KCD2 modules are a maintenance advantage, but in coastal or high-humidity plants, the field-side terminal block can develop contact resistance over 3–5 years. Unplug the terminal block, clean the contacts with isopropyl alcohol, and re-torque to 0.5 N·m. If the fault clears, replace the terminal block rather than the full module.

4. Confirmed module failure — replacement procedure.

  • Isolate the PLC digital output channel driving this barrier (force output OFF in the DCS/PLC).
  • Unplug the field-side terminal block (pins 1–4) — no field wiring disturbance required.
  • Unplug the safe-area terminal block (pins 11–15).
  • Slide the module off the DIN rail — the K-Bus connector disengages laterally.
  • Slide the replacement KCD2-SCD-EX1 onto the rail until the K-Bus connector clicks.
  • Reconnect both terminal blocks. No address switches, no firmware download, no configuration tool required. The KCD2-SCD-EX1 is fully passive on the K-Bus — it is powered and operates immediately upon reconnection.
  • Force the PLC output ON, verify the yellow LED illuminates, and confirm solenoid actuation at the field device.
  • Document the swap in your plant maintenance system with the new module’s serial number.

Common fault codes in connected DCS/PLC systems: If your Siemens S7 or Yokogawa CENTUM VP is reporting a DO channel fault coinciding with this barrier, check for a short-circuit protection trip on the PLC output card — a failed KCD2-SCD-EX1 with an internal short can pull the PLC output into current-limit. Replacing the barrier clears the PLC fault without requiring a PLC card swap.

Reliability in Harsh Conditions

The KCD2-SCD-EX1 is designed to operate continuously in the marshalling cabinet environments found in offshore platforms, desert petrochemical complexes, and tropical coastal refineries. Its 12.5 mm polycarbonate housing is rated to withstand continuous vibration per IEC 60068-2-6 (10–150 Hz, 1 g), which covers the mechanical stress of pump-room and compressor-hall installations where cabinet panels transmit structural vibration. The operating temperature range of –20 °C to +60 °C accommodates both Arctic topsides installations and Middle Eastern process buildings where ambient cabinet temperatures routinely reach 55 °C in summer without air conditioning.

The internal transformer-based galvanic isolation barrier is potted and sealed against moisture ingress at the PCB level, providing protection against condensation cycles in coastal environments where relative humidity swings from 30% to 95% between day and night shifts. EMC immunity is certified to EN 61000-6-2 (industrial immunity), covering 8 kV ESD, 2 kV fast transient burst, and 1 kV surge — the electrical noise profile of a plant with large motor starters and VFDs sharing the same cable trays as IS field wiring. The IIC gas group certification is the highest available under the ATEX/IECEx framework, confirming the barrier’s field-side energy limitation is sufficient for hydrogen and acetylene atmospheres — environments where a lesser IIB-only barrier would require derating or substitution.

Global Express Logistics

Our Xiamen warehouse operates a same-business-day dispatch cut-off of 16:00 CST for in-stock items. The KCD2-SCD-EX1 is a compact, non-hazardous-goods shipment (the module itself is safe-area equipment) and ships as standard air freight under DHL Express Worldwide or FedEx International Priority — no dangerous goods declaration required.

Typical transit times from Xiamen: Europe (Rotterdam, Frankfurt, Rotterdam) 2–3 business days; Middle East (Dubai, Dammam) 2–3 business days; Southeast Asia (Singapore, Kuala Lumpur) 1–2 business days; North America (Houston, Los Angeles) 3–4 business days; Australia (Perth, Brisbane) 3–4 business days. All shipments include a commercial invoice with HS code 8536.49 pre-filled for customs clearance, a packing list, and a certificate of conformance. Tracking numbers are emailed within 2 hours of dispatch. For plant shutdowns requiring weekend delivery, contact us directly — we can arrange Saturday DHL pickup on request.

Export documentation for projects requiring an end-user certificate or import licence (common in certain Middle Eastern and South Asian markets) can be prepared within 24 hours. We have shipped to over 40 countries and maintain a library of country-specific customs requirements to avoid clearance delays.
