Step 1 — Confirm the fault before you pull the cell. On Siemens S7-300/400, check the CPU diagnostic buffer (STEP 7: PLC → Module Information → Diagnostic Buffer). Look for event ID 0x2521 (battery low) or 0x2522 (battery fault). On Allen-Bradley MicroLogix 1100/1400, the battery LED flashes amber at < 2.8 V. Do not assume — verify.

Step 2 — Back up program memory before disconnecting power. Use STEP 7 or TIA Portal to upload the current OB/FB/DB blocks to your PG/PC. On AB systems, use RSLogix 500 to save the .RSS file.
