Troubleshooting & Replacement Tips

Ten years of field calls on Altivar drives teaches you the same failure patterns repeat. Here’s what to check before you condemn the drive — and what to nail down when you swap it.

Common Fault Codes on the ATV320U55N4B:

  • OHF (Drive Overheating) — Nine times out of ten this is a blocked heatsink or a failed cooling fan. Pull the drive, blow out the fins, spin the fan by hand. If the fan is seized, the drive will fault again within minutes of restart. Don’t just reset and walk away.
  • OCF (Overcurrent) — Check motor insulation resistance to ground before you power up the replacement. A shorted motor winding will kill a new drive just as fast as it killed the old one. Megger the motor at 500 V DC. Anything below 1 MΩ, fix the motor first.
  • PHF (Input Phase Loss) — Verify all three input phases at the drive terminals under load. A loose L2 terminal screw is a classic culprit. Torque to spec: 1.5 N·m on the ATV320U55N4B power terminals.
  • SCF (Motor Short Circuit) — Disconnect the motor cables at the drive output terminals (T1/T2/T3) and run the drive unloaded. If the fault clears, the fault is in the cable or motor, not the drive.
  • CFF (Incorrect Configuration) — This appears after a board swap or firmware mismatch. The drive has detected a parameter set that doesn’t match its internal hardware profile. Perform a factory reset: set parameter [FCS] to [InI] and confirm.

Replacement Configuration Checklist — Do Not Skip These:

  • Parameter Backup First: If the old drive still powers up, connect SoMove (free Schneider software) via the RJ45 port and export the full parameter file before pulling the drive. This saves 2–3 hours of re-commissioning.
  • Motor Nameplate Match: Enter motor rated voltage [UnS], rated current [InS], rated frequency [FrS], rated speed [nSP], and rated power [nPr] from the motor nameplate. Do not copy from the old drive without verifying against the physical motor — parameters drift over years of field adjustments.
  • Control Wiring Verification: The ATV320 uses a 24 V logic level on digital inputs. Confirm your PLC output cards are sourcing/sinking compatible. Check DI1 (forward run), DI2 (reverse or preset speed), and AI1 (speed reference) wiring against your panel schematic before energizing.
  • Communication Address: If running Modbus RTU, set [Add] (slave address) and [tbr] (baud rate) to match your network. Default is address 1, 19200 baud, 8N1. A mismatch here will cause the SCADA system to report the drive as offline even though it runs fine locally.
  • Fieldbus Card Seating: If the original drive had a VW3A3616 (EtherNet/IP) or VW3A3608 (CANopen) option card, transfer it to the replacement drive. The card slot is on the left side of the drive. Power down completely, seat the card firmly until the latch clicks, then power up. The drive will auto-detect the card on boot.
  • STO Wiring: The ATV320U55N4B has a built-in Safe Torque Off function on terminals STO1 and STO2. If your machine uses a safety relay, verify the STO circuit is intact before enabling the drive. An open STO circuit produces an [STF] fault and the drive will not run — this is not a drive fault, it is a safety system status.
  • Auto-Tuning: After parameter entry, run motor auto-tune ([tUn] → [YES]) with the motor uncoupled from the load if possible. This takes 30–60 seconds and calibrates stator resistance for accurate sensorless vector control. Skip this and you may see unstable speed at low frequency.

Reliability in Harsh Conditions

The ATV320U55N4B is not a lab instrument. It was designed for the kind of environments where drives actually live — dusty panel rooms, outdoor pump stations, food processing areas with washdown risk, and foundry floors where the ambient temperature climbs past 45°C by noon.

The power stage uses IGBT modules rated for industrial duty cycles, not consumer-grade switching. The DC bus capacitors are selected for long service life under continuous ripple current, not just peak ratings. The conformal coating on the control board provides a baseline of protection against condensation and airborne contaminants — relevant in coastal and high-humidity installations.

Vibration resistance meets IEC 60068-2-6 test profiles, which covers the kind of mechanical shock you get from a compressor room or a press line running nearby. The book-mount form factor, when properly secured to a DIN rail or back panel with all mounting screws torqued, handles these environments without the resonance issues you sometimes see with larger, heavier drives mounted on a single bracket.

Operating range of -10°C to +50°C covers the majority of industrial installations without derating. Above 50°C, derate output current by 2.2% per degree Celsius up to a maximum of 60°C. At altitude above 1000 m, derate by 1% per 100 m. These are not theoretical limits — they are the numbers Schneider’s thermal engineers validated in their test chambers, and they hold in the field.

Units we ship have been stored in climate-controlled conditions. No shelf-aged capacitors, no oxidized terminals. Every drive is inspected for label authenticity, packaging integrity, and serial number traceability before it leaves our warehouse.

Global Express Logistics

Our warehouse is in Xiamen, Fujian — one of China’s primary export hubs with direct access to DHL, FedEx, and UPS international gateways. This is not a drop-ship operation. Stock is physically on our shelves.

Standard dispatch timeline:

  • Order confirmed before 14:00 CST → same-day dispatch
  • DHL Express: 2–4 business days to Europe, Middle East, Southeast Asia
  • FedEx International Priority: 2–3 business days to North America
  • FedEx/DHL to Australia and South America: 3–5 business days

We prepare commercial invoices with accurate HS codes (HS 8537.10 for this product category) to minimize customs clearance delays. For customers in the EU, we can provide EORI-compatible documentation. For customers in the Middle East and Southeast Asia, we have established customs broker relationships that accelerate clearance at major ports.

Tracking numbers are sent within 2 hours of dispatch. For urgent shipments, we provide the AWB number directly to your logistics team so you can monitor the shipment in real time. If your plant has a preferred carrier account, we can ship on your account number to consolidate freight billing.

Every drive ships double-boxed with anti-static foam inserts. The inner packaging meets IEC 60068-2-27 shock requirements for transport. We have shipped to oil fields in Kazakhstan, paper mills in Scandinavia, and automotive plants in Mexico — the packaging holds.
