Common Fault Signatures:

  • IOM ALM (I/O Module Alarm) on HIS — The FCS detects the module has dropped off the V-net/ER bus. Check the module LED status first: a solid red FAIL LED with no green RUN confirms hardware failure, not a wiring issue.
  • AO channels stuck at 4 mA or 20 mA — Often caused by internal DAC failure or a blown output driver on one or more channels. If only 1–4 channels are affected, confirm with a loop calibrator before condemning the whole module.
  • Intermittent output drift — Typically a sign of capacitor degradation on aging boards (10+ years in service). Drift worsens with temperature cycling. Replace proactively during the next planned shutdown rather than waiting for full failure.
  • Module not recognized after nest insertion — Verify the nest slot address matches the FCS configuration. CENTUM VP uses automatic slot addressing via the V-net bus, but a corrupted module EEPROM can cause misidentification. Swap to a known-good slot first to isolate.

Replacement Procedure (Hot-Swap Capable):

  • Confirm CENTUM VP FCS is in online mode and the target module is in a non-redundant slot before proceeding with hot-swap. Redundant configurations require a different sequence.
  • In HIS, navigate to the I/O module status screen and place the target module in MANUAL mode for all associated AO tags. This prevents field devices from responding to stale output values during the swap.
