The CP47100 fails in predictable ways. Here’s what I’ve seen in the field and what you need to know before you pull the card:

Common Failure Signatures:

  • ERR LED solid red on FCS front panel — CPU has halted. Check the HIS alarm summary for FCS CPU FAIL or CONTROL BUS ERROR. If Vnet/IP link is still up but control is frozen, the CP47100 itself is the prime suspect before the ESB bus cards.
  • Intermittent FCS restart loops — Often caused by capacitor degradation on aging CP47100 boards (units 8+ years in service). The module powers up, initializes, then drops. Replace, don’t troubleshoot.
  • Redundancy switchover failure — If your standby CPU won’t take over during a primary fault, verify that both CP47100 units are running identical firmware revisions. A mismatch of even one minor revision level will block hot-standby synchronization.
  • Vnet/IP communication loss post-replacement — After swapping the CP47100, the new module must be assigned the correct FCS node address. This is set via the rotary address switches on the module face (SW1/SW2). Confirm the node address matches the original before powering up.

Configuration Notes:

  • The CP47100 does not self-address automatically — the node address is hardware-set via rotary switches. This is the single most common commissioning error on replacement units.
