Most common failure signatures that point to a failed RLM02:

  • The standby CPU remains in STOP state and never transitions to SYNC after a cold start — the RLM02 handshake is failing at initialization.
  • Intermittent switchover events with no process trigger — a degraded RLM02 link causes spurious failovers that look like CPU faults but are actually link instability.
  • LED status: RLM02 RUN LED off or ERR LED solid red while both CPUs are powered — module has lost internal communication with the CPU backplane.

Step-by-step replacement procedure (field-tested):

  1. Confirm the fault is the module, not the cable. Swap the redundancy link cable first — it is the cheapest and fastest test. If the fault persists with a known-good cable, the RLM02 is the culprit.
  2. Put the system into planned maintenance mode. Force a manual switchover so the standby CPU becomes primary before you touch anything. Never pull the RLM02 from the active primary CPU while the process is running.
  3. Power down only the standby CPU. The RLM02 is hot-plug capable in some firmware revisions, but do not rely on this in a live environment. Safe practice is to power down the standby side.
