SAIA PCD2.C100 — Your Rack Is Starving for Power. Every Hour Offline Costs You.
A PCD2 rack that’s tripping on under-voltage or refusing to recognize expansion I/O isn’t a software problem — it’s a power architecture failure. When the PCD2.C100 Expansion Power Module goes down, your entire I/O bus collapses with it. Analog loops go open, digital outputs freeze in last state, and your DCS operator is staring at a wall of red alarms. There is no patch, no workaround, no parameter tweak that fixes a dead expansion supply. You need the hardware, and you need it now.
We have the SAIA PCD2.C100 on the shelf in Xiamen. Not a lead-time quote. Not a “check with our supplier” response. Physical stock, inspected, boxed, and ready to move the moment you confirm. If your plant is down right now, stop reading and contact us directly.

Troubleshooting & Replacement Tips
The PCD2.C100 fails in ways that are easy to misdiagnose. Before you condemn the module, work through this sequence — it will save you from replacing the wrong component.
Symptom: Expansion I/O modules not recognized by CPU
The PCD2 CPU (e.g., PCD2.M480 or M5xx series) polls the backplane at startup and during runtime. If the C100 has lost output regulation, the I/O bus voltage drops below the threshold required for module initialization. The CPU logs a rack configuration error, and the affected slots appear absent in PG5 hardware configuration. First, measure the backplane bus voltage at the C100 output connector with a calibrated DMM. If the reading is outside the rated band, the C100 is the fault source — not the I/O modules themselves.
Symptom: Intermittent I/O faults under load
This is the most deceptive failure mode. The C100 appears functional at light load but sags under full I/O population. You’ll see sporadic channel faults, watchdog resets on individual I/O modules, or PG5 diagnostic messages referencing bus errors. The root cause is typically capacitor degradation inside the C100’s regulation stage — a failure mode that accelerates in high-ambient-temperature environments. Swapping the C100 is the only fix; there is no field repair for internal PSU components.
Slot Placement — This Is Not Optional
The PCD2.C100 must be installed in the designated expansion supply slot defined in the PCD2 rack hardware manual (SAIA document 26/789). It is not a general-purpose slot module. Installing it in the wrong slot will not damage the unit, but it will not function — the backplane connector pinout for the C100 slot is physically different from standard I/O module slots. If you’re unsure which slot is correct, count from the CPU module position and refer to the rack silk-screen labeling.
No DIP Switches, No Address Configuration
Unlike some I/O modules in the PCD2 family, the C100 has no user-configurable addressing. It is a passive power infrastructure component — it does not appear as a logical node in PG5 hardware configuration. After installation, the CPU does not need to be re-programmed or re-downloaded. Power cycle the rack and verify bus voltage recovery. If the CPU still reports rack errors after confirmed C100 installation, check backplane connector seating and inspect for bent pins on the rack slot.
Post-Replacement Verification
After seating the replacement C100 and restoring rack power, use PG5 online mode to confirm all previously faulted I/O modules are now recognized. Perform a forced I/O scan and verify channel values are updating correctly. If any I/O module remains in fault state after the C100 is confirmed operational, that module has a secondary fault unrelated to the power supply — investigate individually.
Reliability in Harsh Conditions
The PCD2 platform was designed for building automation and light industrial environments, but real-world installations are rarely clean. Control panels in mechanical rooms, rooftop AHU enclosures, and process plant MCC rooms expose the PCD2.C100 to conditions well beyond a climate-controlled server room.
Thermal stress is the primary aging mechanism for any switch-mode power supply. In a poorly ventilated panel, ambient temperatures inside the enclosure can reach 50–55 °C during summer peak loads — right at the C100’s rated operating limit. At these temperatures, electrolytic capacitors inside the regulation stage age at an accelerated rate, reducing MTBF significantly compared to operation at 25 °C. Units we supply are inspected for date codes and stored in climate-controlled conditions to minimize pre-installation aging.
Vibration from nearby HVAC compressors, pumps, or rotating machinery transmits through panel mounting surfaces and into the rack backplane. Over years of continuous operation, this mechanical stress fatigues solder joints on the C100’s internal PCB, causing intermittent contact failures that are nearly impossible to reproduce on a bench. If your installation is in a high-vibration environment, ensure the rack is mounted on vibration-damping standoffs and that the panel door is properly latched to prevent resonance amplification.
Humidity and condensation are a persistent threat in coastal facilities, food processing plants, and any installation where the panel is subject to temperature cycling that causes dew point crossover. The PCD2.C100 is rated IP20 — it relies entirely on the enclosure for environmental protection. If your panel has compromised door seals or inadequate heating to prevent condensation, a replacement C100 will fail for the same reason as the original. Address the enclosure before installing the new module.
