Troubleshooting & Replacement Tips

Ten years of field calls on ControlNet systems teach you one thing fast: the 1756-CNB/D fails in predictable ways. Here’s what to check before you pull the module, and what to watch when you drop the replacement in.

Common Fault Indicators:

  • NET LED solid red: Module has lost all scheduled connections. Check coaxial tap integrity and trunk termination resistors (75 Ω at both ends). A missing terminator is the #1 cause of this fault on aging ControlNet segments.
  • OK LED flashing red (fault code 16#0001): Module self-test failure — the hardware is gone. This is your replacement trigger. No amount of firmware reload will fix it.
  • OK LED flashing green: Module is in configuration mode. It has not yet received a valid network schedule from RSNetWorx. This is normal on a fresh swap — do not panic.
  • Intermittent connection timeouts (Major Fault Code 71): Usually caused by a degraded coaxial tap or a node address conflict. Verify node address uniqueness across the segment before blaming the bridge module.
  • All I/O goes to safe state but controller stays running: The bridge has lost its scheduled connections but the controller is still executing. Check the I/O tree in Studio 5000 — yellow triangles on the CNB module confirm the bridge is the fault point.

Hot-Swap Replacement Procedure (1756-CNB/D):

  1. Document the current node address (visible on the module’s rotary switches — two hex dials on the front face). Match exactly on the replacement unit before insertion.
  2. Set the replacement module’s node address dials to the same value as the failed unit. The address is set in hardware; the module reads it at power-up. Getting this wrong means the replacement comes online at the wrong node address and your scheduled connections will not re-establish.
  3. Power down the chassis slot if your chassis does not support live insertion for communication modules. The 1756 chassis supports hot-swap for most modules, but verify your chassis firmware revision supports it for CNB modules before attempting.
  4. Seat the replacement module. The OK LED will flash green — this is expected. The module is waiting for the network schedule.
  5. Open RSNetWorx for ControlNet. Go to Network → Download to Network. This pushes the stored NUT and connection schedule to the new module. The NET LED should transition from red to green within 30 seconds of a successful schedule download.
  6. Verify in Studio 5000 that all I/O modules under the CNB branch show green (no fault triangles). Cycle the controller from Program to Run mode if required.
  7. Check firmware revision: navigate to the module properties in Studio 5000 → General tab → Firmware Revision. If the replacement module carries a different firmware revision than the failed unit, update via the Firmware Update wizard to maintain consistency with your project file.

Node Address Conflict Resolution: If two modules share the same node address after a swap, both will fault. Use RSNetWorx’s Node Commissioning tool to scan the live network and identify duplicate addresses before the replacement goes in.

NUT Mismatch Warning: If your replacement module’s firmware is significantly older than the network’s configured NUT, it may not be able to sustain the scheduled interval. Always verify firmware compatibility against your RSNetWorx project file before closing the job.
