GE IC693CHS391 — Stop the Clock on Your Downtime. Ship Today from Xiamen.
Your Series 90-30 expansion rack just failed. The line is cold. Every hour offline is burning through your production budget. You don’t need a sales pitch — you need the GE IC693CHS391 on a truck to your facility before the next shift starts. We stock it. We ship it. Same-day dispatch on confirmed orders before 15:00 CST.
The IC693CHS391 is the standard 10-slot expansion baseplate for GE’s Series 90-30 PLC family — a passive backplane chassis that extends your main rack’s I/O capacity without touching the CPU or the program. No re-addressing. No firmware headaches. Slot it in, cable it up, power it on. That’s the job.

Troubleshooting & Replacement Tips
Ten years of field calls on Series 90-30 systems teach you the same lessons over and over. Here’s what actually matters when you’re swapping an IC693CHS391 under pressure:
1. Verify the expansion cable before blaming the chassis. The IC693CBL3xx cables develop intermittent faults at the D-sub connector pins — especially in high-vibration environments. Before condemning the CHS391, reseat both ends of the cable and check for bent pins. A bad cable will throw the same “Rack Fault” or “I/O Bus Error” as a dead baseplate.
2. Power supply slot is non-negotiable. The IC693CHS391 has a dedicated power supply slot at the left end of the chassis. Do not attempt to run the rack without a properly rated PSU installed. IC693PWR321 (120/240 VAC) and IC693PWR330 (24 VDC) are the two most common fits. Mismatching input voltage is the fastest way to kill a new chassis on first power-up.
3. Rack addressing is automatic — but verify it. The Series 90-30 system uses automatic rack addressing via the expansion cable daisy-chain. The CPU rack is always Rack 0. Each subsequent expansion rack increments by 1. There are no DIP switches on the CHS391 for rack number — the position in the cable chain determines the address. If you’re inserting a replacement rack mid-chain, the downstream racks will re-address automatically on the next CPU power cycle. Confirm rack assignments in the CPU’s I/O configuration table before going live.
4. Module slot assignments carry over — if your program is right. The I/O configuration in the CPU’s ladder program is slot-specific. When you replace the chassis, the physical module positions must match exactly what’s configured in the program. Slot 1 in the old rack must be Slot 1 in the new rack. Swapping module positions without updating the program will cause I/O faults immediately on startup.
5. Common fault codes to know:
- %S0017 (Rack Fault): CPU cannot communicate with the expansion rack. Check cable, PSU, and rack address.
- %S0018 (I/O Bus Error): Backplane communication failure. Often a cable issue, but can indicate a failed backplane connector on the chassis itself.
- %S0019 (Module Fault): A specific module in the rack is not responding. Isolate by removing modules one at a time.
- Loss of I/O on specific slots only: Suspect a localized backplane trace fault on the old chassis — the CHS391 replacement will resolve this.
6. Firmware compatibility: The IC693CHS391 is a passive chassis — it contains no firmware. Compatibility is determined entirely by the CPU model and the I/O modules installed. No firmware matching is required for the chassis itself.
7. Grounding. Bond the chassis ground lug to your panel earth before powering up. Floating ground on a Series 90-30 expansion rack causes erratic I/O behavior that looks like a software bug. It isn’t.
Reliability in Harsh Conditions
The IC693CHS391 was engineered for the factory floor, not the server room. GE designed the Series 90-30 chassis to operate continuously in environments that would destroy consumer-grade electronics within weeks.
The backplane PCB is conformally coated to resist moisture ingress and condensation — a critical feature in food processing plants, coastal facilities, and anywhere with aggressive humidity cycling. The chassis housing is heavy-gauge steel with a powder-coat finish that resists corrosion from cutting fluids, cleaning agents, and airborne particulates common in machining and chemical processing environments.
Vibration tolerance is rated to IEC 68-2-6 standards, making the IC693CHS391 suitable for installation adjacent to large motors, compressors, and stamping presses without requiring additional isolation mounts. Operating temperature range spans 0°C to 60°C (32°F to 140°F) with storage down to -40°C — meaning it survives both the Siberian winter warehouse and the Malaysian summer production floor.
The backplane connector system uses gold-plated contacts with positive retention — the same contact technology that makes Series 90-30 modules hot-swappable in some configurations. After 20+ years in service, these connectors still make reliable contact when the chassis is properly maintained. That’s why facilities keep running Series 90-30 systems long past GE’s end-of-life announcement: the hardware simply doesn’t quit.
Every IC693CHS391 unit we ship has been inspected for backplane connector integrity, housing deformation, and corrosion. Units that don’t pass visual and continuity checks don’t leave our warehouse.
