Troubleshooting & Replacement Tips

Ten years of field calls on F2-32RM failures produce a short list of root causes. Here is what actually happens on the floor, and what to do about it before you pull the module.

Symptom: CPU ERR LED active, cam outputs frozen mid-cycle.
This is almost always EEPROM failure on the F2-32RM itself. The cam pattern stored internally has been corrupted — typically triggered by a power interruption during a write cycle or a voltage spike on the 24 VDC backplane rail. First step: attempt a full cam data re-download from GX Developer or the legacy F2-PCS console. If the module acknowledges the programming tool but the write fails with a verify error, the EEPROM is degraded. If the module does not respond to the programming tool at all, the communication interface on the module is gone. Either way, replacement is the correct call at this point — do not waste time on repeated write attempts.

Symptom: Outputs switching at incorrect angular positions — machine timing is off.
Before condemning the F2-32RM, check the resolver feedback cable. A broken or degraded shield on the resolver cable introduces electrical noise that shifts the apparent angular position reported to the cam switch module. A 2–3 degree offset is enough to cause mis-timed outputs on a high-speed press. Inspect the cable from the resolver body to the F2-32RM connector — look for pinched insulation, corroded pins, or a shield that has separated from its termination point. If the cable is intact, check the cam angle offset parameter in the program. This value can drift after a CPU battery replacement on older F2 installations.

Replacement procedure — what the manual doesn’t emphasize:

  • No hot-swap. The F2-32RM does not support live removal. Power down the entire F2 base unit before extracting the module. Pulling it under power corrupts the CPU’s I/O allocation table and typically requires a full cold restart — sometimes a CPU memory clear — to recover.
  • Save cam data first. If the failed module still powers up at all, connect GX Developer and upload the cam program before removing the unit. Store the file. If the module is completely non-responsive, you will need to reconstruct the cam table from the machine’s original commissioning documentation or from a backup on the CPU’s memory card.
  • Slot position = module address. The F2-32RM uses automatic slot-based addressing — there are no DIP switches to set. Install the replacement in the exact same slot as the failed unit. Installing it in a different slot changes its address and the CPU will not map I/O correctly without a program modification.
  • Download cam data before first power-up. Do not power the machine with an empty cam table loaded. The outputs will activate in an undefined sequence on the first resolver pulse. Download the cam program to the new module before enabling the base unit.
  • Calibrate resolver zero-point. A new OEM module may carry a factory zero-point offset that differs from your machine’s calibrated reference. Use the F2-32RM’s built-in zero-point adjustment function and verify against a known mechanical reference position — typically the machine’s top-dead-center mark — before resuming production.
  • Match the full part number. The JY331A401D suffix identifies the specific hardware revision for the standard F2 base interface. Variants such as F2-32RM-ES use a different resolver interface and are not drop-in compatible. Substituting a different sub-variant will cause resolver communication errors that look like a wiring fault — and waste hours of diagnostic time.
