Troubleshooting & Replacement Tips

Common failure signatures on the PS35*A:

  • FCS rack goes dark with no alarm pre-warning — Capacitor aging on the primary filter stage causes sudden output collapse. No gradual degradation. The module simply stops. If your redundant unit also fails to pick up load, check the backplane bus connector for oxidation before condemning the second PSU.
  • Intermittent FCS communication loss (ALM 3001 / ALM 3002 on Centum VP) — Marginal DC rail voltage causes the FCU to drop off the V-net/Vnet IP bus. Measure DC output at the backplane test points. Anything below spec by more than 3% under load is a failing PSU, not a network fault.
  • Overtemperature shutdown (OT LED lit, no output) — Fan failure or blocked cabinet airflow. Before replacing the PSU, verify the cabinet fan tray is operational. A new PS35*A will fail identically in a thermally compromised enclosure.
  • Output OK LED cycling on/off — Indicates load instability. Check for a shorted I/O module on the backplane drawing excess current. Isolate by removing I/O cards one at a time.

Hot-swap replacement procedure (redundant configuration):

  1. Confirm the standby PS35*A is carrying full load — check the LOAD SHARE LED on both units. The surviving module should show steady green.
  2. On the failed unit, press and hold the INHIBIT button (if fitted) to isolate it from the bus before extraction. This prevents a voltage spike on the backplane during removal.
  3. Slide the failed module out along the rack guides. Do not tilt — the backplane connector is keyed but fragile under lateral force.
  4. Inspect the backplane connector pins on the rack for bent contacts or carbon scoring before inserting the replacement.
  5. Slide the new PS35*A in until the front panel is flush and the locking lever clicks. The OUTPUT OK LED should illuminate within 3 seconds of seating.
  6. Verify load sharing has resumed — both PSU LOAD SHARE LEDs should be lit. If the new unit does not enter load-share mode, check firmware revision compatibility (see note below).
  7. Log the replacement in your CMMS with the module serial number and date. YOKOGAWA recommends proactive replacement of the partner PSU within 6 months if both units are the same age.

Firmware & hardware revision note: The PS35*A has been produced across multiple hardware revisions. If your Centum VP system is running a recent software release (R6.xx or later), confirm the replacement module’s hardware revision is compatible with your FCU firmware. Mismatched revisions can cause the new PSU to fail load-share negotiation silently. Contact us with your FCU model and software revision — we will match the correct PS35*A hardware revision from stock.

No DIP switches or address configuration required on the PS35*A. It is a passive power module — slot position determines function. Ensure it is installed in the correct PSU slot (not an I/O slot) per your rack layout drawing.

Reliability in Harsh Conditions

The PS35*A was not designed for a server room. It was designed for a refinery control room in Jubail, a petrochemical complex in Ningbo, a power plant in Sumatra. YOKOGAWA’s industrial-grade power supply design philosophy starts from the assumption that the environment will try to kill the hardware.

The module’s internal construction uses wide-temperature-range electrolytic capacitors rated for 105°C junction temperature — not the 85°C consumer-grade parts that fail prematurely in warm cabinet environments. The transformer core is potted against vibration-induced winding fatigue, a failure mode common in modules installed near rotating machinery. The PCB conformal coating provides protection against humidity ingress and condensation events during plant startup after extended shutdown.

In redundant configurations, the load-sharing circuit is designed to balance current between two modules passively — no active communication bus between PSUs means a failed communication path cannot take down both power supplies simultaneously. This is a deliberate fault-isolation design choice by YOKOGAWA’s engineers, and it matters in the field.

Our Xiamen warehouse stores PS35*A modules in climate-controlled conditions at 20°C ±5°C, 40–60% RH, in original anti-static ESD packaging. Modules are not bulk-stacked. Each unit is individually bagged and labeled. Long-term storage degradation — particularly electrolytic capacitor dry-out — is mitigated by controlled environment and stock rotation.
