ProSoft PLX32-EIP-PND — Standalone EtherNet/IP to PROFINET IO Protocol Gateway
The PLX32-EIP-PND is a DIN-rail-mounted, standalone protocol translation gateway manufactured by ProSoft Technology. It establishes a deterministic, bidirectional data bridge between an EtherNet/IP network and a PROFINET IO network without requiring any PLC-side programming or middleware software. The module operates independently of the host controller’s backplane, drawing 24 VDC from a standard DIN-rail power supply and communicating with both networks through two electrically isolated RJ45 ports.
In a typical deployment, the PLX32-EIP-PND presents itself simultaneously as an EtherNet/IP Adapter or Scanner on one port and as a PROFINET IO Controller or Device on the other. This dual-role architecture allows a Rockwell Automation ControlLogix or CompactLogix controller to exchange process data with Siemens S7-1500, S7-1200, or ET 200 distributed I/O nodes — and vice versa — without any custom function blocks or OPC-UA bridging layers. The configuration is handled entirely through ProSoft Configuration Builder (PCB), a free Windows-based utility that generates the GSDML file for PROFINET device import and the EDS file for EtherNet/IP scanner configuration.
The module supports up to 248 bytes of input data and 248 bytes of output data per network direction, accommodating the majority of industrial process data payloads encountered in discrete manufacturing, batch processing, and continuous process control. Cycle times are configurable and can be tuned to sub-10 ms intervals, providing the deterministic latency required for coordinated motion and interlock logic across heterogeneous PLC networks.
Physically, the PLX32-EIP-PND measures approximately 35 × 100 × 115 mm and weighs 240 g. It mounts on a standard 35 mm DIN rail and requires no dedicated rack slot or backplane connection. The enclosure is rated IP20, making it suitable for installation inside sealed control panels in industrial environments. Operating temperature range is 0 °C to +60 °C, with storage rated to −40 °C / +85 °C. Humidity tolerance is 5–95% RH non-condensing.
The PLX32-EIP-PND carries CE marking per EMC Directive 2014/30/EU and Low Voltage Directive 2014/35/EU, UL/cUL listing under UL 508 Industrial Control Equipment, and RoHS compliance per Directive 2011/65/EU. ODVA conformance testing covers the EtherNet/IP stack, and PI (PROFIBUS & PROFINET International) certification covers the PROFINET IO stack. These certifications are prerequisites for deployment in regulated industries including pharmaceutical, food and beverage, and automotive OEM supply chains.
Applications span automotive assembly lines connecting Rockwell ControlLogix PLCs to Siemens PROFINET robot controllers and servo drives; food and beverage facilities bridging EtherNet/IP SCADA to Festo valve terminals and Siemens ET 200SP I/O; pharmaceutical packaging lines requiring validated data paths between Allen-Bradley safety PLCs and PROFINET filling machinery; water treatment plants integrating legacy EtherNet/IP RTUs with modern PROFINET sensor networks; and machine OEM panel builders who need a compact, certified gateway that ships inside control panels destined for mixed-vendor global customers.

Hardware Logical Analysis
The PLX32-EIP-PND implements a dual-stack, shared-memory translation architecture. Each network port is driven by a dedicated communication processor: one handles the EtherNet/IP CIP stack (Class 1 implicit I/O and Class 3 explicit messaging), while the other manages the PROFINET IO stack including the RT (Real-Time) and IRT (Isochronous Real-Time) frame scheduling engine. Between these two processors sits a shared data memory region — a mapped buffer that both stacks read and write on their respective cycle boundaries. This decoupled architecture means that a transient fault or retransmission event on one network does not stall the other, preserving data integrity across both buses.
From an EMC design perspective, the module’s PCB layout separates the high-frequency Ethernet PHY circuits from the low-voltage logic core using a ground-plane segmentation strategy. The RJ45 connectors incorporate integrated magnetics (transformer isolation) that provide 1500 V AC common-mode rejection between the cable shield and the internal logic ground. This isolation is critical in industrial environments where ground potential differences between control panels can reach tens of volts, particularly in large facilities with long cable runs between buildings or across machine cells.
The power input stage includes a reverse-polarity protection diode and a transient voltage suppressor (TVS) rated to absorb IEC 61000-4-5 surge events up to 1 kV (line-to-earth). An onboard DC-DC converter provides regulated 3.3 V and 1.8 V rails for the processor cores, with soft-start sequencing to prevent inrush current spikes from tripping upstream DIN-rail circuit breakers during panel power-up.
The PROFINET IO stack within the PLX32-EIP-PND supports both RT Class 1 (standard cyclic data exchange, ~1 ms minimum cycle) and RT Class 2 (IRT, sub-1 ms with hardware timestamping) frame types, depending on the connected IO controller’s capabilities. When operating as a PROFINET IO Device, the module responds to DCP (Discovery and Configuration Protocol) broadcasts, allowing the IO controller to assign the device name and IP address automatically during startup — eliminating manual IP configuration steps during commissioning.
On the EtherNet/IP side, the module’s CIP stack supports Class 1 (implicit, cyclic) connections with configurable RPI (Requested Packet Interval) values from 2 ms to 3200 ms. The connection manager handles up to 32 simultaneous Class 1 connections, enabling a single PLX32-EIP-PND to serve as an Adapter to multiple EtherNet/IP Scanners concurrently — a topology useful in redundant PLC architectures where a primary and a secondary controller both require read access to the same field data.
System Integration Benefits
- Eliminates cross-vendor PLC programming overhead: All data mapping is defined in ProSoft Configuration Builder. Neither the EtherNet/IP controller nor the PROFINET controller requires custom function blocks, add-on instructions, or ladder rungs to exchange data through the gateway.
- Supports all four integration topologies: EIP Scanner ↔ PROFINET Controller, EIP Scanner ↔ PROFINET Device, EIP Adapter ↔ PROFINET Controller, EIP Adapter ↔ PROFINET Device — covering every combination of master/slave roles without hardware changes.
- Deterministic real-time response: Sub-10 ms end-to-end latency from EtherNet/IP input to PROFINET output (and reverse) ensures that interlock signals, emergency stop conditions, and coordinated motion commands propagate within the timing budgets of most safety and motion control applications.
- Diagnostic transparency via LED indicators: Dedicated LEDs for module status, EtherNet/IP connection state, and PROFINET IO connection state provide immediate visual fault isolation at the panel level without requiring a laptop or HMI connection.
- Live data monitoring during commissioning: ProSoft Configuration Builder includes a real-time data monitor that displays the current values of all mapped data words, allowing engineers to verify data flow and byte-order alignment before going live.
- GSDML and EDS file auto-generation: PCB generates the PROFINET GSDML device description file and the EtherNet/IP EDS file automatically from the configured data map, eliminating manual XML editing and reducing commissioning errors.
- Compact form factor preserves panel space: At 35 mm wide, the PLX32-EIP-PND occupies the same DIN-rail footprint as a standard 2-pole circuit breaker, making it practical to retrofit into existing panels without redesigning the enclosure layout.
- No recurring software license costs: ProSoft Configuration Builder is provided free of charge with no seat limits, annual renewal fees, or runtime licenses — reducing total cost of ownership over the system lifecycle.
- Broad PLC compatibility verified: Tested and documented with Allen-Bradley ControlLogix (L6x, L7x, L8x), CompactLogix (L1x–L3x), MicroLogix 1100/1400, and Siemens S7-300, S7-400, S7-1200, S7-1500 families, covering the installed base of the majority of global manufacturing sites.
- Firmware field-upgradeable: Firmware updates are applied via the Ethernet port using PCB, allowing security patches and feature additions to be deployed without removing the module from the panel or returning it to the factory.
